Incredible. I hate to say it but I was really hoping he would never break Kipketer's record, nobody will ever match Kip's smooth stride and dominance. But congrats nonetheless!
I cannot believe Kipketer's record is broken.
Awesome run from Leo Manzano too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mind boggling. The rabbit was out in 48.65 and the 600m split was 1:14.54. I would like to see how that compared to Kipketer or Coe. That seems incredibly fast to me.
Of note is Manzano's PR. 1:44.5 is incredible for a guy that I never thought had much speed. He is a in great shape. Now he just needs some consistency.
This thread had TROLL written all over but I can't beleive IT REALLY IS A NEW WR!!!
And the scary thing is - this race was far from perfect. Rudisha was 4-5m behind Tangui for most of the first lap. Tangui dropped out around 430m.
So, essentially no drafting, pacing only to 430m and a tad fast for the first lap.
Can he go sub 1:40 in a perfect race?

I think Rudisha went through 400 in about 49.0/49.1 today, then 600 in 1:14.54
Very similar to what KIpketer did in his 1:41.11: - 49.3, 1:14.5. Rudisha's run sounds better though, as Kipketer had pacing up to 550m.
I'd say Kipketer's 1:41.24 in Zurich 11 days earlier is still intrinsically better than Rudisha's run today. He went 48.4!! 1:14.2 that day. Far too quick on first lap.
Coe's WR "officially" was off 49.7, 1:15.0. I believe he was more like 1:15.4 at 600m . He also had to run wide to pass rabbit on bend, so that would have slowed down his 600 time by a couple of tenths.

Please don't fall into the "Manzano is inconsistent" mindset that Letsrun oddly seems to have. He's consistently very good, with maybe one or two poor races thrown in there. If your definition of consistent is "never ever has a bad race, ever", then sure. But in the grand scheme of things, Manzano's as consistent as they come.

What's a perfect race? Does it exist!?
I don't think he will get below 1:40, though I didn't think he'd beat Kip's WR this year either, so who knows!?
On the other hand, shit happens. I'd have said Coe was capable of quite a bit faster, and sub 1:41.0 after his WR, and the same for Kipketer, but neither did due to illness. So Rudisha might never run faster again. Luckily he is still v. young (according to his official age).
What do you think, will they switch to a 1k in Rieti, or will he give the 800 another shot?
1st page. Great race for Manzano!
Someone post a video soon!!!
1:41.09. Awesome race- if anyone finds a link of the race video, please post it.
CAN RUDISHA TOP THIS? WILL HE?
I think the comment comes from the fact that Leo BOMBS worse than any other elite athlete in the world at his level. I have never heard of 1:44/3:33 guys getting DFL and run 3:50 jogging it in so much. No question he is an animal -- but I think that's where the poster's comments were coming from.
Nice run, Leo!
I know little about 800m racing. Is it typical for a quality 800m race to have splits that are 3 seconds apart (49.0/52.11)?
