I understand the cost considerations of compression socks - $50 for a pair of socks can be steep. There is some good research on the efficacy of compression socks for post-run recovery and increased comfort during run. So, I think in time the socks will get more respect.
I use the socks myself and I have noticed more triathletes wearing the calf compression sleeves.
If you are not concerned about brand - you can pick up some very high quality gradient compression socks and calf sleeves at SaveOnCompression.com. I have found their socks to be as good, or better, in quality than other major brands. They also have some unique styles which is cool for me.
If you want a branded product - CEP puts out a strong gradient compression sock. They are originally a medical manufacturer of socks and have a high level of quality control.
Be sure you are getting gradient compression - some companies advertise "compression" but do not have a true gradient. I have researched this a lot and found out that if the product has seems, it is most likely not a true gradient compression sock. The difference is vital to the performance and recovery. Any respectable company should be able to show the compression levels of their socks and how they test them.
I hope this helps.
