Java EE, Carrier Grade Linux, Solaris 10, ZFS migration is a huge area for CS guys. I work on ECAD though where CE is more needed that CS, plus Verilog and Java, heavy digital design background.

+1
It really depends how good you are. If you have functional CS skills and are not a complete freak of nature then I would give product management a try. More creativity, more money, more contact with that outside world and much more interesting.
That is just my 2 cents.
I'm not sure why you would go into product mgmt as a CS major - almost none of the product mgmt people at my company have engineering degrees.
To answer the op: yes. Depends on the area, but the CS demand in the northeast is pretty high relative to the economy as a whole.
I don't think of myself as a genius CS guy by any stretch and I got hired pretty easily - getting the interview was the really painful part.
I think CS is a better choice in general since it gives you a little more insight into the nuts and bolts of programming, computational theory, and how operating systems work at a low level. I'm not sure there's much merit to learning about signal processing / etc (like you will in CE) unless you're specifically looking at more EE-style jobs.
It is VERY easy to get a job with CS. You have sooo many options available to you, not just Programming. Programming is easy enough to get a job, couple that w/ the fact that you can also do QA, Technical Writing, or even do IT style jobs, the possibilities are endless. The economy being down is meaningless to us. Myself and all my buddies I graduated w/ all had jobs w/in a month out of college, and trust me we aren't the most ambitious guys either, we pretty much got into the first places we interviewed at.
So yeah, they're getting hired :P
Yes, CS jobs are there, but the number of people getting huge $ is very small now. Ten years ago India and China took over CS jobs at a fraction of the cost. Script programming, Java programming, Web, Apache, MySql, PC/MAC can be had for $10 hour via the internet from India/China. You can still make high wages with CE or EE background though because hard sciences knowledge still pays well. Be prepared to dive into other related engineering details though like thermodynamics, industrial, materials, like I have to do to because my companies want engineers that can do many jobs now.
