how much time do you spend on your feet vs. at a desk?
During construction season I spend about half my time walking around a contrustion site and the other half doing paperwork or reviewing drawings in a constuction trailer. In the winter it is 100 percant design work in my office.
I'm an Environmental Engineer, which is essentially a specialized Civil Engineer.
I spend about 75% in the office (at a desk), and 25% in the field (on my feet). Personally, I think it's a great balance, because most of the time, I'm off my feet not draining myself for my next run, but I do get to go outside to break up the monotony of being in the office all the time.
If you're looking for a generalization about CE's it might be hard to find one. It really has a lot to do with what company you work for (international, public, private, etc.) and which sector (government, private, consulting, etc.). It certainly varies, but as a vague generalization, Civil Engineers spend more time at a desk than in the field.
Not a CE, but I work closely with one. If I had to give you an estimate:
He is 40% at his desk, often on the phone
59% attending meetings
1% in the field
