13:54 - that's even worse than the 10k last night. If these guys are going to do tempo runs at collegiate paces, then I don't blame espn for cutting away.

bump
and even a ridiculous time. learn how to spell asshole. dont bump your own stupid threads asshole.
Between the humidity and the fact that no one's at the meet, this Des Moines thing is not looking good.

I agree - really pathetic to the point it's acutally disgusting, truly disgusting. Hell, nearly 35 seconds slower than what Pre ran in friggin' 1972 at the OTs final. Nearly 40 yrs have passed and we can't even match that.
You guys are being totally unfair. They all ran a strong race. Let's say you're a college guy with a 13:30 PR entering this race. You're still going to get destroyed by Lagat and hopefully you're smart enough to know better than to try and lead the race at your PR pace.
Comparing these times to rabbited times is unfair. All of the guys who toe the line in the championship know it's smartest not to lead. A rabbited race makes it so nobody has to be the lone guy leading.
Balls of the night in the 5k go to Jen Rhines for knowing what she had to do to stand a chance. It didn't work out, but she ran the race she knew gave her the best chance. Those other girls behind her who sat and kicked? Well, they also know what gave them the best chance and it worked.
Not to be a Pre-hater, but I'd also like to point out that Pre's running got him 4th place when it mattered. When he was leaving the track in disgust, I doubt he was thinking, "At least I ran some really good time trials in the past when it didn't matter as much."
why are you all a bunch of crabby assholes...
hes not going to freaking PR at an unimportant race. "oh he could have at least gave an effort" I know I sure wouldn't if I'm probably getting paid to just make an appearance for some cash.
what do you want from him...it's smart for him to run it as a workout and still get a win. you guys are pathetic. he just set an AR and you get mad at a sub 14 race...
rupp and lagat don't give a shit what anyone thinks. kudos to them for their wins regardless of how or what time they won them in.
stop getting all your panties in a bunch about low key races for pros

Learn how to use capital letters, idiot!

Who gives a shit about Pre and I'm pretty sure Lagat can match that nitwit.
Uh, why do you consider the USA championships an insignificant meet? Perhaps that's part of the problem here.
Either way, I don't think anyone is angry, but more disappointed, and quite frankly, bored. The fact that Lagat just ran an AR makes me expect more of him, honestly. Why is it surprising that some fans of track just want athletes to perform?
It's not like running isn't Lagat's professional career. Wouldn't you be disappointed if you watched any other professional entertainer perform, only to watch them do so at an amateur level?
I like this. I think the cult of Pre is finally dead. Good riddance, and about time too!

And good riddance to you to....OFFICIALIZER. Gee whiz, who cares what you think.
I agree. It is absolutely ridiculous (or rediculous). We all understand his point, but those of us who can't defend ourselves need to find something stupid to fight with. This isn't a shot at Lagat. It's a shot at all the other people in the field. The great thing about track and field is that we all run the same distance and we are all measured against the same type of standard (time). 13:54 is a slow ass time for a national championship. Why do people defend these shitty performances. I don't understand why they take it personal.
I would like to see more runners go out and take their turn leading the pack. Instead one runner will drag ass for 3 or 4 laps and everybody else is happy to run behind.
In conclusion, 13:54 really sucks for a national championship. It doesn't matter too much which modern legal track and which legal timing unit you use. It's still slow as shit. I think more runners need to take their turn pushing the pace for at least a lap. The funniest trend that I've seen is runners with absolutely no kick sit in the back of the race until the end of the race just to get smoked in the last lap.
Yes! Thank you. This is exactly what I was trying to convey in this post and my thread. What do they have to gain by waiting around? Go with some guts and at least score a PR!

Indeed, and since there were multiple threads complaining about Rupp, some pages deep; we must spend more time complaining about Lagat, since he is better than Rupp and yet his performance was worse, if we are not racists of course.
Since ESPN cut away to baseball... I'll make this a baseball analogy. A routine fly ball to center field... the center fielder moves easily under the ball and makes the catch. You find this boring so you want him to wait until it is almost too late, then dive to make the catch just above the ground.
Why do so many people that hang out at running forums know so little about track? Are they just "joggers" that have never competed?

Ahh...well put my friend! The guys competing as USAs don't give a lick WHAT WE WANT! Let's ask Lagat if his race strategy had anything to do with making the viewers happy. It's a competition...time is irrelevant...1st is 1st and that's all that matters. Those guys have plenty of other opportunities to chase times and PRs. Like it was said before, are there any actual competitors on this board?
I personally think Lagat is the last to blame and the rest of the field is first to blame. Lagat is the heavy favorite so I don't expect him to do anything other than sit and kick. Especially due to the fact that he has the most speed. On the other hand if you are part of the pack you have to realize that in this year where you are not qualifying for anything that the only thing that really matters in this race is winning. I ran in multiple NCAA championship races and was never the favorite or expected to be in the top 5 to be honest. My senior year the pace was a crawl (came through 400 in 72) so with 800 to go I flew around the pack with about everything I had. Before anyone could figure out what had happened and truly respond I had almost 25 meters which I held until the last 200. I was run down but I won by .23 seconds. Never would have happened had I sat with the field.
