This is bullshit. Maybe he's thinking of the record store in "High Fidelity":
“There was a time when if you walked into a run specialty store, there would be a guy who was 6-2 and weighed 140 pounds behind the counter and he sized you up and if you weren’t someone that was going to run a marathon, they didn’t want anything to do with you,” Mr. Sullivan said. But today, in contrast, such employees are more like “Sherpas who guide you through the sport of running,” even if you’re “just a jolly jogger,” he said.
Since taking the editorship at Runner’s World seven years ago, Mr. Willey has had the stated goal of broadening the magazine’s appeal to more casual runners and to “disabuse people of this notion that in order to be a Runner’s World subscriber you have to be a marathon runner who is running 50 to 70 miles a week,” he said.
This notion is not prevalent.

Agreed. I was only aspiring to improving and running like the best when I subscribed. I canceled RW in the mid-1990s when, even then, things were watered down and going downhill even faster. No more "31-min 10k training program" or "beginner's" marathon program w/6 days-25-60 miles per week and articles with stories of races and the elites' tactics.
PS Brooks shoes are toe-bangers w/my feet, so even their magic bus won't yet convince me.
Hey Hansons,
You are no longer part of Brooks. They are not interested in the "Elites" or "Development". Brooks is trying to become Puma. The cool brand that is more interested in selling casual wear or fitness runners. Having a goal is no longer in.
"In 2009, 43.9 million people ran at least once, compared with 31.4 million in 2000, an increase of nearly 40 percent, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association."
Great stat.
All Brooks shoes have massive heels. Not for me.
