Let's assume he trained specifcially for the 5k his whole life instead of the 15, and he ran it in his prime, what do you think he would've been capale of?
I say somewhere in the 12:30's

I think Lagat can run about 3:31 if he really wanted to in the 1500m currently. That is about 5 seconds off his PR. So, using some ridiculously simple, unscientific math, I come up with a 5k time of... (drum roll please) 12:37
in his 3'26 prime, he had potential to run <12'45, maybe nearer 12'40 end, seeing as he was likely slower than hicham over 800 & almost equal at 1500 & hicham went close to 12'50 in a race where he was on for maybe 12'47 when it got tactical with cherono & he lost - indicates better endurance than hicham for longer distances, say beyond 3k
it's only potential, as it has to be virtually certain bernie's endurance didn't "last" perfectly to 5k back in '01 - he likely woud have been able to follow <12'45 pace to 3k (<7'39) & perhaps just to 4k, but likely wouda faded badly in the last 1k to something in 12'55 - 13'00 range
maybe he isn't past his prime
He ran what he ran.
slower: drugs weren't as good back then

But testing is better now.
but drugs are ahead of testing even tho they in inc at the same rate
its the same companies making the drugs and the tests!!
(its like selling bullets and hospital equip haha)
So why didn't he concentrate on the 5,000m?

Because he was (a) a useful miler; (b) considered himself a miler. Simple

Because if not for El Guerrouj we might be discussing if Lagat was the greatest 1500/miler of all time. He would have the 1500 world record, an Olympic gold and silver and several more world championship golds.
If he were on the same EPO he used when running 3:26, then perhaps 12:39. If EPO never existed, probably 3:29 and 12:50!
Endurance usually improves to a point with age, while speed deteriorates.

Second fastest ever at 1500 and two olympic medals. Yeah, that's pretty useful.
on EPO anywhere from 12'45 to 12'55, w/o EPO, anywhere from 13'10 to 13'20

Its not that simple. I'm sure he would be happy to have avoided El G if he could have run 12:3x. Maybe he considered himself a miler because he was better at that distance?
I don't understand the point of these conversations about who's on drugs because we will never know or who and that goes for all sports so either we consider everyone guilty or everyone clean because we will never know who has taken EPO or PEDs and who has not and it's really annoying to make allegations against people who have not tested positively.
be well :)
12.40 without drugs.
Some people can't see past their jealousy, so every fast runner in their twisted minds is a druggie.
who knows if lagat would have run 3:26 without having el guerrouj out in front of him to chase. he's more of a racer than a time trialer so i suspect he'd run fast enough to win races. without el g in the race a 3:29-3:30 would win most races on the circuit from '01-'04.

If not for Bekele, Sihine would have... Hope you know the rest..
Seen this a million times, but never gets old
