stress fractures - less protein, more calcium (NOT from milk), and for Christ sake - more vitamin D! Stay as far away from fluoride as possible, it make bones really fragile. If you are already poisoned (i.e. your government dump toxic waste into tap water), fluoride can be removed from bones by borax or boric acid, 20-60 mg boron daily for few months, then iodine supplementation in bigger amounts, much higher than RDA. Boron from borax or boric acid make bones stronger, so you use it even without fluoride poisoning.
There is much more to do if you want stronger bones, google it. Basically proper nutrition is the key, and it's hard to find something as far away from healthy eating as average american diet.
About shoes - start barefoot, it will give you excellent feeling how to relax your ankle and land properly. Then just any kind of shoes without high heel and without control. For me it cured my old injuries in no time, but caused new one - I ran waaaaay too much, too fast, in wrong shoes, on concrete and with wrong ankle motion :D Luckilly I recovered in few days.
