good question, the sad thing is I doubt we will ever find them (especially the Ovett 3.30) because they were both from Rieti back in the day when that meet wasn't exactly well publicised or even covered by the media (TV media).
Sad.
never seen sydney marees 1500m WR either

I've tried looking for these races for many years. They must exist, as I remember them showing the last lap of Ovett's 3:30.77 on Sunday Grandstand at the time and Coe's last 100m was shown by ITV the following Friday before his Crystal Palace run. Also in a documentary I have they do a montage of their races, which includes the finish of Ovett's Rieti run.
I think they (BBC & ITV) probably got the rights to show the clips from either Eurosport (who I think used to show these meets live at the time) or an Italian channel that would have televised the meet.
I know that the 1500m races from Rieti in 1988 and 1990 are on Youtube, so I'm pretty sure someone somewhere would have the races in their entirety. Just hope they surface at some time.
I've got the split times somewhere I can post on here if that helps!? I know it's not quite the same as watching it!
1981Alan on Youtube might have had them, but all his videos were taken off.
No. I asked him at the time all his videos were on there, but he didn't have them. He had the same set of dvds that I had, and they are a few of the races not on there!
I'd love to see splits, thanks.
Normally the best places to look are the Internet or a site called youtube? Let me know if you still can;t find the and I will see what I can do with my own searching
Hahahaha....here we go again. OK, go ahead: Show me those youtubes of those two races. Thanks.

So, right now, I can't view that. Is it Coe's 3:29 or Ovett's 3:30?
These are splits acquired from AW, T&FN and (for Ovett) the "IAAF progression of World Records" book -2007 edition.
Ovett: - 3:30.77
400m - c.54.6 (pacemaker, D. Mack -54.17)
800m - 1:51.9 ( " " " -1:51.67)
1000m- 2:22.5 ( " " " - 2:22.30)
1100m- 2:35.7 ( in front)
1200m- 2:49.14
1400m- 3:17.5
Both accounts say it was windy conditions (blowing into the athletes' faces on the bak straight. According to the T&FN published book, "The Milers", Ovett's last 100m (with wind behind him) was 13.2. Knowing that they have published inaccuracies before, I'm not certain as to the validity of this split, though it seems reasonable.
So his splits were: - 54.6, 57.3, 57.2, 41.6 (55.0, 13.2)
Coe: - 3:29.77
400m - 54.0 ( pace, A. Belkassem - 53.36)
800m -1:52.0 ( " " " -1:51.05)
1100m- 2:34.5 ( " J. Chesire - 2:34.33)
1200m- 2:48.10 (in front)
T&FN at the time reported that had Chesire not slowed down suddenly at the bell, causing Coe to run into the back of him, stumble and then run wide round Chesire, then the world record (Aouita's 3:29.46 at the time) probably would have gone. Coe later corroborated this in his biography, when he said that, "I must have lost at least half a second with that stumble".
So Coe's splits were: - 54.0, 58.0, 56.1, 41.6 (55.2)
Both races were run after their peak years, and the conditions for Ovett and the uneconomical pacing (and stumble) for Coe, probably meant both could have run faster on the day and certainly faster at their peaks.
Still would love to actually see these races.

?? No, that EL Guerrouj v Geb over 1500m indoors in 1997!
Neither Coe's 3:29 or Ovett's 3:30 currently are or have ever been on Youtube.
Thanks, that's great. Yeah I'd love to see these too. (Is Mr "numbnuts" supplying the real deal, or trolling?)These both shocked me, because for Ovett, it was after his down year (post 1981 accident) and his 4th at Worlds, and in Coe's case, 1986, pushing 30, a big chunk (2sec) off his best time.
That's what I thought. As long as My Tormenter makes it look like I'm wrong, that's all that matters in his books.

They didn't shock me too much. It was pretty clear from '79 that both could & should have run under 3:30 then. I remember Mel Watman, editor of AW at the time, stating that he thought Coe was going to run 3:28 in Zurich 80 after the Moscow Olympics, but the pace really dropped on the 3rd lap, so he didn't push it until the last 100m, when he pulled easily away from Scott & Walker, winning in 3:32.
Ovett was never comfortable front running from way out in a record attempt, and I think he just tried harder in 83 to prove to himself and doubters after Helsinki, that he still had it.
Coe had dire pacemaking in the 2 attempts he had in 81 & 84, and he had all those problems in 82 -83. Certainly anyone with a 3:31 pb in a solo rum off 52.4 and 1:49.1 was capable of much faster than 3:30.
I'll keep looking for those 2 races and let you know if I find them.
Have any of you guys tried calling Eurosport or BBC?
deanouk thanks so much. Love your posts. Cheers.

I sent an email to Eurosport the other year, but got no response!
Might try BBC, but don't think they actually covered the event itself, so might be tricky.
I think the best bet is if someone taped it off TV at the time.

Are you talking to me? I have not posted on this thread until now. So, you're wrong (again).
