Sketchers Shape Ups v. Nike Free v. Vibram Fingers
Which, if any, are good? Which, if any, are complete BS?
Thanks.

Sketchers Shape-Ups?
for what?
anyway, i ran in Nike Free 5.0's more than i should have, and had achilles issues. however, they were definitely a good shoe, although i cant speak for the others.
dude, you can't run in sketcher shape-ups. They are made for walking and walking only. Nike free looks way cooler than any FiveFinger.
Vibrams - Extreme end of the spectrum, beyond "minimalist," but useful if you want to BAREFOOT run
Frees - Nike's barefoot/trainer mix. Good for getting some additional lower leg/foot strenghthening for higher milage types. For most people, you could skip the money and style and just cool down barefoot...
Shape Ups - rubish. A heavily-marketed product with minimal benefit; probably mostly a placebo. The design would seem to cause biomechanic problems in the long run, but I guess it's whatever floats your boat...
From the NYT, 2004:
"Dr. Thomas M. DeLauro, a podiatrist who teaches at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, said that he was puzzled by the MBT [Shape Ups]. "Why you'd benefit from this shoe seems mysterious," Dr. DeLauro said. "
I have a heel spur problem and the Sketcher Shape-ups seem to provide better protection than other walk around shoes with inserts. I'd recommend them for heel spur, plantar fascitis. but they aren't for running.
I recently won a marathon wearing VFFs. The truth is I was wearing shape-up the entire race and just switched to the VFFs for the photos at the end of the race.
