Just curious- given Alberto's history of health problems, if he was forced to retire tomorrow, does Schumacher take over the entire group or does NIKE bring in another coach? Can Rupp fit in with the Schumacher group?

Rupp might want to make the move anyways. The Schumacher group has had alot of success especially in his perspective distances recently, just saying...
Schumacher was lured away from Wisconsin by Salazar for precisely that reason: to be the hand picked heir to the program. So if Salazar retires or has another heart attack or whatever, Schumacher is the man.
Alberto is a young man. He should be able to coach for another 20 years assumming he didn't abuse his body with drugs as a young man.
as has salazars group...
that said one of the most important things about the Portland groups model is a small athlete to coach ratio, so if salazar goes down jerry would take the top spot, however they would probably bring on another coach
the only coach whos really proven himself to be on the level of those 2 is cook
You really think NIKE cares about running coaches? Your delusional.
every body reacts differently to stimulus whether they use(d) drugs or not.
yeah, i get what you are saying
Nike would do a cost assessment of this program and decide whether to continue it or not. Nike is a very successful "business" and almost everything they do is based on that.
This program is part of their successful branding. Very critical to the success of a product.
There are some great coaches out there who would find this program very attractive. What makes Salazar so good is his Oregon/Nike history but a guy like Vin Lananna could run a program here too. Not my favorite coach but the point is that they are out there.
Ummm...ever heard of Jason Vigilante?

the entire existence of the oregon project shows that nike cares about distance coaches...
This program costs so little to Nike that it's existance isn't in jeopardy from budget cuts. Much bigger and juicer areas to cut from. Plus this is a pet project of the CEO and those never get cut.
And if the Stanford Peyton Jordan meet is any indication it is getting some good results.

Your a bad speller.

Nike is Phil Knight is the guy in the "Stop Rupp" tshirt.

I'm gonna assume this means 'respective,' and while you're right, Salazar has had equal success at those distances. Solinsky edges Rupp at 10k, both breaking AR; Ritz edges Teg at 5k, both breaking 13:00 barrier. Rupp has no incentive to move, not with all of the HUGE pr's he's set over the last two years and all the success he's had--even the loss in the 10k was a success, because 27:10 don't come easily. Also, with Gags involved in the project I would say they have some cushion to lose a coach, or to bring in someone like Lanana, Cook, Vig, Donnelly, Hudson, Daniels.
Find someone else that knows their way around an EPO syringe.
respective doesn't make sense there either so your just as dumb. he probably meant prospective.

ummm ever hear of toloso kotu?
also what about the distance coach at goldenwest junior college in huntington beach, california??? he has never in over 30 years of coaching failed to improve an athlete.
and if you dont believe he is the greatest coach to ever walk the face of the earth, all you have to do is ask him.
I am not an experienced runner or coach. But having observed the sport a little over the last few years I think Mr. Salazar might be trading his rep as a coach based on his own running results. The pressure that he puts on some of his young athletes by saying they are "in shape to set a world record" (Kara Goucher) or "Galen is going for the AR" sets them up for failure and is not, in my humble opinion, good coaching. Galen Rupp did exactly as his coach asked him to do and it was a poor strategy. Not only that, it was a highly publicized poor strategy. Would it not be a little more strategic to keep your cards a little closer to your chest & not hang your youngsters out to dry?
It reminds me of the American approach to cycling a few quadrennials ago when US Cycling focused all of their efforts on developing a "super" bike and they prepared to break the world record by a few seconds. Unfortunately, the Aussies trained their butts off, shot for the moon and blew the WR and the Yanks out of the water.
