The term "jogged" gets used pretty liberally when it comes to describing a race with less than full effort, however I don't think I've ever seen a sub 4 run as a jog until today.
He has to be ready to crank a mile. Hopefully with the late start to the season he'll run USA's and the mile at PRE this summer so we can finally see what Andrew Wheating is really capable of. Time for him to chase the big dogs instead of being chased by the small dogs.
nice run for bumbalough. 5k @ mt. sac last week and 3:59 today. nice return from mono in feb.
Jeff See was a man among boys at Drake today. Ran 54. for last 400 to win from back.
Dude has so much talent. I think he can be like a Sebastian Coe and excel in 800m/1500m. The raw speed is there. The endurance is there.
the OP isn't kidding ... it looked like he was running 4:15. It was disgustingly easy

Missed the video feed, but looking at the record, Joe Falcon ran a 3:53+ in Arkansas' '89 record leg. Sick! Don't think Wheating could have closed on that.

I do think he could have. Hell had he only kicked in his last 200 he would have run 3:56 or better and that still means JOGGING everything else. Wait until you watch the video.
I'm guessing he closed in a :59 for that 3:59 and and I would bet he could have closed in :52.X and guess where that puts him after jogging the first 3 laps? 3:52."

From a different thread, this to me is correctomundo.
I've seen a lot of Wheating races where he's looked in control or easy before he kicked, but I don't think I've ever seen his stride look so short before. The last lap was like a warm down.
Anyone get his splits? He could have run that in trainers and still looked easy.
anyone know where a video of the men's dmr can be found?
Video should be up by sometime tomorrow AM, hopefully by noon.
lol i doubt he could have closed in 52.X there... I do however think he is capable of running a 3:51/52 this year
Was this race a full 1600m?
Yup it was def. a jog

You may be right, supposedly he ran a :55 on his opener even though it looked like a :59/:60 effort. That means that his last lap must have been over :62 as easy as it looked.
As of now they are busy getting the shuttle hurdle races and masters 100 races online! Priorities right?!
FYI it's supposed to be showed tomorrow on TV, I wouldn't be surprised if the show clips of the DMR.

Coe-like raw speed? Or were you just using an extreme example. Because See is not in the same world as Coe. Coe is one of the top 3-5 all-time middle distance runners.
you mean top period?

No, top ever. And I think Runner Joe was refering to Wheating, not See.
But I still disagree. I can see Wheating getting down to 1:43 and 3:32, but not 3:29 and certainly not 1:41.

It's pretty hard to predict someones top end, especially when you know it's pretty far off from where he's at now.
Keep in mind that Wheating has 3:38 & 1:45.0 marks from a couple years ago and those marks were after 3 years of serious running. He has never raced in european meets and only one U.S. championship/ Olympic Trials.
Keep in mind that his 1:46.3 indoors this year was his opener and was .5 seconds off the fastest time in the world for the indoor season. While it was done on an oversized track, most 200 tracks now are very fast. Wheating ran that race at 1:47 pace and kicked the last 50-60 meters. It looked much like his DMR leg today except with a short kick at the end.
All I know is that when he is really stretched out he's going to drop his times pretty substantially. Seb's best marks were after years of European racing circuits. Wheating has yet to do a single race in Europe or a PRE classic or any of those fast non championship meets.
He's a racer, not a time trial man for sure so when the time comes to race really fast his times will come.
Looking back to the trials he ran 1:45.0 running in the outside lane and blowing past the line. He had the fastest last 100 meters and he ran the longest race of the field. He had 1:44 in him back then so i don't think 1:43 for a lifetime best is a stretch at all. I think he has more potential in the 1500 & 3000 though. American records? Who knows.
That certainly didn't LOOK like a 3:59.
He looked like was just cruising to get through the race and protect the lead.
