Looks like most North American flights to and from Europe are cancelled for the next couple of days.

Geb should announce he's running Boston just so he can withdraw a few days later because of flight cancellations.
Just kidding, I love Geb.
That stinks. (I mean, since I'm born-and-raised in MA, "that's a wicked bummah, kid.")
Hopefully skies clear and things end up working out for people heading over from Europe.
If you're reading this from across the pond, and your flight happens to have been cancelled, please accept my sympathies. There will be other marathons, and other Bostons!
Why they f*** don't they just oh I don't know fly the f*** around the god damn volcano

if a european wants to run a marathon they'll do London. Why the hell would they want to goto Boston?

So true! We had Rotterdam and have Hamburg coming up -- Boston does not get any hype besides from some marathon-collectors with a tad too much bragging intentions...

METEOROLOGY DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY!
http://inner-moppet.net/morbo/pics/top.gifTwo points, neither of which has anything to do with the relative merits of Boston, London, Rotterdam, etc.1. My post was simply meant to say something nice, on the off chance that some bummed-out European (or U.S. expat) runner was reading Letsrun after missing the flight to Boston.2. The OP asked about foreign runners missing Boston because of the volcano. Since Boston closed months ago, presumably at least some foreign runners in question decided that they DID want to run Boston. The statement "if a european wants to run a marathon they'll do London" isn't really relevant here, since the OP is talking about those who are already signed up for Boston. The statement is false for the runners in question. There is probably an interesting debate (by Letsrun standards of "interesting debates") about which marathon Europeans should run. Different runners like different races. This is why hundreds of Europeans run Boston every year, and hundreds of Americans (presumably) run London. Of course, as I mentioned above, that debate has nothing to do with the OP's post or any of the replies. London is a great city - I used to live in Southwark. Now if you'll excuse me sweetheart, I need to go eat my baked beans, drive laps around the local rotary, and yell at the Sox highlights from last night's debacle.

You missed the memo, everything bad can still be blamed on Bush.

in the article it says abdellah falil who ran in the 2008 olympic 10k for morrocco is stranded in europe until saturday at the earliest, i just looked at the vienna elite list for sunday's april 18th vienna austria marathon and falil is on the elite list as he is on boston's elite list, so my guess is he will run vienna and then hopefully the planes will be okay to fly and he will run the boston marathon the day after the vienna marathon.
i had originally thought maybe due to the iceland volcano situation he is running the vienna marathon INSTEAD OF boston, but a friend told me that would be impossible as entry into vienna has been closed for month's.
falil is probably trying to set a world record for fastest 2 marathons about 30 hours apart.
Some of the african runners stuck here in UK on transit have taken the train to Vienna to run. Think Falil is one of those.
Did all the elites arrive in time for Boston or are some missing ?
Quite likely going to be some no shows for London next week as this hangs around for days to come.
From the Vienna City Marathon's website:
"Up to 2,000 foreign runners could theoretically be hit by the closure of airspaces and might not be able to make it in time to Vienna for Sunday’s race. Without late entries the event so far has a total entry number of 32,524 runners. There is no danger at all that the Vienna City Marathon could be cancelled, it will go ahead on Sunday.
Most of the international elite runners have already arrived in Vienna and were present at the press conferences on Thursday and Friday. Among them are Kenyans Felix Limo, Luke Kibet, Paul Biwott and Joseph Maregu as well as Romania’s Luminita Talpos and Kenya’s Hellen Kimutai."
In a rare departure from protocol, the BAA will be handing out registration numbers on Monday morning near the bus loading on Boylston and Tremont. Very nice job to them for responding to any runners who may have problems due to flight cancellations, etc.
Globe article says 500-600 European runners affected. No flights moving today either. I'd say most all of those numbers are going unclaimed Monday. Very tough break- I feel for them.
