I swore I'd never wear a GPS, but I ended up getting one because, as a coach, I can run next to a kid and tell him approximately what his current pace is and what their average pace is. It a nice tool for them.
I now use it for almost all of my distance runs. I'm not addicted to it yet, but it sure is nice knowing exactly how far I run and what my mile splits along the way are.
The tough part for me is learning to not push myself. When I have my watch set up to give me automatic splits each mile, I have a tendency to push, push, push until I'm going way too fast.
I consider myself a serious runner. In the past year, I've done everything from 15:10 for 5000m to 2:30 for a marathon. Not the best around, I obviously take my training seriously.

My advice is to not spend extra for the GPS. If you're serious then you don't need to know exactly what pace you're going or exactly how far you've run, but with a little self-awareness you can train at exactly the right efforts. I've used a HRM for a few years and gotten incredible results.
Just a plain old Polar RS200 gets you max/average HR for every interval and stores a ton of data.
