I think running 100% of your running barefoot is a fad, and no, running 100% running 100% barefoot won't make you faster. I chuckle every time I hear a barefooter say "humans have evolved over millions of years to run barefoot". That has no relevance to running in the 21st century, as most of us run on pavement and concrete, and we were raised in shoes. If you are stupid enough to run barefoot on concrete and pavement, there is really no point in trying to convince you that shoes will protect you and allow you to train optimally so you can run faster. Yes, Africans do run without shoes when they are young, mainly because they can't afford them, and never on pavement. However, all of them wear shoes to train and race when they can afford them and realize they do help.
I think most 100% barefoot runners are more concerned with how they look, than getting faster. And there are no long term studies to prove that barefoot running is better for your than wearing shoes, nor that shoes inflict more injuries than going barefoot. I also would like to see a long-term study on how serious training without shoes affects your body.
That said, I think some barefoot running on soft surfaces might help strengthen your feet and does help you with form.
If you really believe your shoes are hurting your form, may I suggest you learn to run properly? Blaming your shoes for your sloppy form is lame, lazy and plain stupid. If you need some help, give Bill Rodgers a call and he can explain how he won Boston and New York 4 times and set American records at Boston, training and racing in...shoes. He still runs daily in....shoes.
