So does this make him a cheat and his sub 13 suspect now? This procedure was always shady to begin with.

Can you please show where WADA has banned it?
Last time i checked it was not banned.
I'm going to need you to provide back-up documentation, as the info I remember reading recently from IAAF actually further supported the procedure.
What is this platelet therapy? Can anyone post a short description?
I have had it done numerous times for injuries. The take out a couple of syringes of blood, really not very much, and spin it down to to concentrate the platelets. Then the re-inject it into the area of injury to stimulate healing by promoting blood flow to the area. For some people it seems to help a lot, for me it was just okay. It is in NO way performance enhancing. Google platelet rich plasma therapy for more info. It's been around for a few years now.

You inject your own platelts into the injured area to help it heal. Sounds pretty close to blood doping to me, but what do I know.

Except in blood doping you are removing significant quantities of blood, freezing them, letting your body build them back up over weeks or months, then putting the removed blood back in for EXTRA blood cells.
With PRP it is put back in minutes later, and not all of it in injected back in, so if anything it would decrease performance. Plus it is not really enough blood to make any difference anyway.
Its Mr. Tegenkamp to you sir!
I don't think WADA banned PRP. What they banned is reinjecting spun blood into an otherwise healthy area of the body.
Here's an article on the technique: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/injured-heal-yourself-with-your-own-blood/article1351339/
WADA list here:
see item 6 on page 4-- clearly outlawing PRP techniques starting Jan 1, 2010.
Teg did nothing wrong in 2009.
Viren did nothing wrong

If it allowed you to recover from an injury faster than the normal healing of your own body, then it is definitely performance enhancing!!!!
Based on the rules the treatment was not banned in 2009 when it was administered to Tegenkamp, therefore not a big deal. That being said in 2010 it is absolutely a violation.
Now wheather or not it enhanced performance is undeniable as a previous poster stated. It allowed him to recover from injury quicker then natural.
Does this make his sub 13 suspect? The group probably knew that it was shady business and being looked into by WADA when administered, however no violation actually occured. Bottom line is Alberto and Jerry most likely knew it was a grey area to be treaded.

Where do you draw the line? So should we ban over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs since they help you heal faster? What about methods of cross training which allow you to maintain some fitness while being injured? Surgery?

By that logic ice, anti-inflamatories, and deep-tissue massage are all peformance enhancing. I don't believe that banning them would serve any purpose, even if they are PEDs (which, if that term weren't so loaded, I would say they are).
Might as well outlaw Cortisone injections as well.
Question is intra muscular the same and intra-tendon
For the most part its injected into and around the tendon. I believe teg was his achilles (tendon) not muscle.
Platelet-derived preparations (e.g. Platelet Rich Plasma, “blood
spinning”) administered by intramuscular route. Other routes of
administration require a declaration of Use in accordance with the
International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions.
and other substances with similar chemical structure or similar biological
effect(s).
The WADA only bans intramuscular delivery of PRP. The clause also gives an out: "Other routes of administration require a declaration of Use in accordance with the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions."
My reading of the science of PRP is that it is intended for injection into areas with limited blood circulation, like ligaments and tendons - and NOT into muscle tissue which already has good vascular supply. So if standard practice is followed and documented, it would appear to be a perfectly legal procedure.
