i have a stress fracture in my tibia that i found out about 8 weeks ago. i have done no running and have been running in the water since. how long before i can start running and should it still be tender to touch after 8 weeks?

It is a delicate situation. You should test it out but if it hurts stop. Every fracture is differant but you just need to try it out to see.
I just started to run again after eight weeks off from my stress fracture in my tibia. I too have pain when I push on it, but I had a bone scan and they said it was okay to run. YOu should be okay, but if you aren't sure just go to the doctor.
thanks for the line iarunner. i think this might help out a lot. by the way, are you from iowa? if you are, where from? again thanks.
can we get this back up.
this is another stress fracture question. i thought i may have had a potential one developing in my foot and i did the ultrasound test to see whats up. suposely its supposed to hurt if you have a fracture and when they put it on the hurt spot, it was a warm feeling and was really tingly on the bone. it was almost the same feeling when you bump your elbow. on the foot with nothing wrong, i felt nothing with the ultrasound. does anyone have any insight?
Hey I have a tibial stress fracture that I also haven't run on in two months (and I haven't trained on since May), and it is still VERY sore. I was kind of wondering the same thing you are Quincy, because I think it should be healed by now.
Quincy- yes I am from Iowa. A small town near Cedar Rapids... are you from there too?
Hurt - ultrasound is sometimes used as a cheap alternative to an xray or bone scan. the high frequency sound waves make tissue (including the tissue surrounding bone) vibrate, so the theory is, if there is a fx, it will hurt when it vibrates. although pain w/ US is a good indication that there might be a fx, the absence of pain doesn't mean that there's NOT one. if you're still having pain w/ weight bearing, i'd get an xray, or better yet a bone scan. it may be a stress reaction, which is one step below a stress fx - a bone scan will reveal either.
one thing to remember, sometimes after a fracture has healed there can still be discomfort (sometimes slight pain) in the same area, this is simply called post-stress fracture syndrome, it is a rather delicate situation but just because one may still have tenderness and or reduced pain doesnt necessarily mean that there is a problem--be careful, listen to your body, be patient
iarunner- i am going to college at uni
any of you guys ever felt phantom pains in the area of your fracture even when it's not tender to touch anymore? just minor aches when you think the fracture is healed? what does this mean?
Yea, that is normal. As long as they don't worsen, it's probably not a big deal.
back in malmo's day, there was no such thing as a stress fracture!
l-f
every time i try to run really slow and on a soft surface, it still hurts. i cant tell if its just me thinking its going to hurt or if it actually is. i know it feels a lot better than it did 8 weeks ago. 8 weeks ago i couldnt even touch it without it hurting really bad but now i can push on it with little or no pain. any other suggestions? thanks
when i returned from my stress fracture, it hurt pretty bad for the first week or so and i thought i wasnt healed. it might just be the scar tissue causing the pain and if it is, it should be fine soon.
harding-
did you have a tibial stress fracture?
Stress fractures suck. My running hasn't been the same since mine back in aprill.
how hasnt your running been the same?
what methods do you guys use to come back quickly and carefully from fractures? can you guys outline the first few weeks of training that you do?
