No race today at State College

Looks like some D1 schools are afraid to run in some snow.
Will they run tomorrow? Will schools try to travel over for prenats?
It's XC there is supposed to be inclement weather!
So...... you plan a major college meet and you have no backup plan...Penn State does not have some other course/park that they could contest the race.... seems like very poor planning on their PS XC coaches/meet management part.....
SIDENOTE:
Tomorrow at PreNats they have open "boxes" in the four seeded races- mens' races only using 35 of 42 boxes and women assignments only 37 of 42. Some of the ranked teams maybe could head west to IN State and race...
Some teams will be racing at Lock Haven today instead
Seems strange to cancel a cross country race because of conditions on the course. Maybe it was cancelled because of anticipated weather-related road/airport problems?
I don't think Coach Groves would have canceled.
I would imagine the integrity of the golf course was called into concern.
Regionals in 1997 was run there in 4 inches of wet snow and slush.
The current coach is a goddamn skirt.
Course not Rupp certified = race cancelled
I know that with the tunnel vision of many of you on here to cancel a race is diabolical. However, there are other things to consider than mere "getting my race in". The place that they are running will be there after you leave. They probably don't want to tear it up by having a stampede on it. Relax and go somewhere else.
But isn't the Big 10 suppose to be there? What if it is the same problem? Do they move the Big 10 to Lock Haven?
Okay I saw the course, nothing but a f***ing shitty mess. Completely unrunable (if thats a word). Coaches would have to be stupid to let their athletes have run in it because of the risk of injury. The meet will take place at Lock Haven and come teams will go. Kentucky and Michigan left almost immediately after they showed up.

No he wouldn't. And if he dared do such a pansy-assed thing his athletes would have revolted.

Keep out! You had your chance to compete with the big dogs, but you got cute and tried to dodge the competition. Stay at Lock Haven, it's where you belong!

malmo, the one issue of interest is about the golf course. Running on a course when it is at the freezing/ice edge and in a condition to make it muddy as well might do a fair bit of damage. Was this possibly called off by someone with veto power at the golf course? Of course, the big shots might also be concerned about liability and just said no on those grounds as well. (Harry, of course, would have either shouted back or possibly just held the meet anyway.)
The new Wisconsin course is 'golf course-like with a good grass surface that is maintained by the crew at the UW University Ridge facility next to the XC course. This means that they can keep any area that they want closed off to recover, which is not always an option with a golf course. The UW used to host an invite many years ago but back then the golfers did not play that much into October. Now the city course did not want to have to vacate 27 holes for Friday afternoon and all day Saturday for the invite - only the Big Ten meet has been held here for the last two+ decades and that meet is later than an invite. This is the reason UW finally got their own dedicated course.
I heard part of the reason it was cancelled is because trees were falling under the weight of the snow. It would probably be a bad thing if a tree crushed a number of runners or spectators.
It's not always the coach's call.
I am not defending golf people, because I can't stand their pretense, but the runners could do tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to the golf course. I doubt that this decision was made by the coaches.
Penn State isn't even allowing football parking on the crummy grass tailgate lots (which are basically cow pastures) this weekend for fear of destroying the land, so you can imagine how they feel about having 500 or so runners in spikes traverse the golf course. The ground is not frozen, but there is 6" of snow on it, so any traffic will basically turn it into a muddy mess. As a cross country runner and tailgater I'm fine with that; but I'm saying that there are others who are not OK with it, including facilities managers.
