Lesson: never attack someone with a samurai sword. Not that that's a lesson most people actually have to learn...
maybe he got it from swordsofmight.com
Yes, you have to wonder about the decision to attack a guy who is wielding a sword. At that point, it just seems logical to throw up your hands, admit defeat and wait to be arrested. But I guess if the guy had any common sense, he wouldn't have to rob people for a living.
"There seems to be a noticeable increase in crime in the neighborhood," Hughes said. "I am concerned for my family's safety."
Ha, not anymore.
Effing awesome. Goodbye, scum.
Jotaro,
It was a replica, not a real Samurai sword.
Your friend,
Musashi

thats an ignorant statement. be careful
I keep fighting sticks by my bed. I've been thinking about getting an extendable baton (ASP) but I don't know if it's legal. Anybody have one?

I've got an extendable baton, a good 8 incher, works like a charm and as far as I know it's legal.
be careful? of what?
i agree with bear of bad news.

i have a friend who's a cop (SWAT) and he hates ASP batons. he much prefers the good old police nightstick. ASPs flex and bend.
I used to keep one in my car. I put it back in the house after a few months. Carry any weapon around, you will feel inclined to use it in the face of a perceived threat. That's a great way to end up w/ a lawsuit or worse.
In your house, a bat, a baton, brass knuckles etc all work.
I find the violence (and the response to it) in the US disturbing. Its almost as bad as the early 80s, when I variously had a knife held to my throat, a sawed off shotgun put in my face, I got my ass kicked (for nothing - not a robbery) resulting in a lot of dental work; family members have had worse.
Guns and violence are not the solution...but people seem hell-bent on "defending" themselves.
Also, this will just incetivize more people to take on intruders on their own.
What if the guy had a gun?
What if the student was killed as well?
This won't discourage people from B&E. It will encourage people to confront intruders, and the intruder will think, "That guy in Baltimore was hacked up. Glad I have a gun!" and blow you away, no questions asked.
Its extremely dangerous confronting somebody in your home. they are edgy, and ready to do WHATEVER they have to in order to leave. Putting yourself needlessly at risk will not ameliorate the situation at all, unless you are under direct threat.
Why go looking for a confrontation for somebody who is potentially extremely dangerous? I do not get it.
I don't need an extendable baton. Maybe I'll just get a Maglite. I guess I am lucky that I've never been a victim of crime.

They are only legal in certain circumstances. For instance if you have one in your car or are carrying one around in a bar you can be charged with all kinds of weapon infractions. Police do not like them because they carry them and don't want to end up in a fight with someone who has one as a result they are classified as an exotic weapon and subject to all kinds of weird laws depending on the state you live in. They fall in to that grey area of the legality with the law similar to switch blades and brass knuckles. I would be very careful having one of these or using it, if you accidentally scare a cop or get caught with it in a less than ideal situation you might just do some jail time for it.
wow, just... wow. i was going to make a few jokes, but you did all my work for me.

not really...most people never have anything remotely criminal happen to them in their lives.
Some people, however, live in desperate fear of it, and the feelings of helplessness that go with this.
No matter what your strategy - gun, bat, legal, illegal - your goal should be to GET AWAY. Not hurt the person, not exact revenge - just get away.
Ask any victim of violent crime (including me) and what they will tell u (>90% of the time) is they want to move on, and in the same situation they'll just focus on surviving and getting away alive and unhurt.
I watched America's Most Wanted once and their were these two guys who were hired to kill a guy who had a home building business. The guy sees the two getting out of a car on the street and coming towards his house. He gets a handgun out of a kitchen drawer and fires at the hitmen when they break in through the back. They then exchange rounds but the guy runs out of bullets and gets killed by the hitment. It seems like the guy would have been better off getting his gun and then trying to get into a safe room or get out of the house rather than make a stand in the kitchen.

Disagree. He just needed one of these:
