Down weeks can be good when preparing for a race or after a period of building up miles. I usually take a down week after a month or so of building milage or after a month or so of high milege. It isn't always necesary to take a down week. But they can go a long way to recover your body and your mind. I would say a down week every three to fives weeks is good and I have lower my milege by 15 - 20 miles from my high week depending on how many miles I have run. I may go down as much as 30 - 40.
