Do you take out the padded thing inside the shoe before putting in the orthotics? How much weight do orthotics typically add to your shoes and is it noticeable?

Depends on the weight of the orthotic
They add a little weight to the shoe, it is definately noticeable, but definately worth it if you have any pain/injuries. You should look around and take a look at different orthodics, because some are waaaaayyyy better than others.

The weight of the orthotics is the weight added to the shoes. Mine weigh about 2 ounces.
Mine add 2.4 oz., but I get some of that back by removing the insole and the rest back by going to a more neutral platform w/o the motion control.
The amount of weight added to your shoes is exactly equal to the weight of the orthotics. To find total shoe weight you take the weight of your shoes + the weight of the orthotics.
Or, to find the weight of your orthotics, you take the combined weight of shoe + orthotics and subtract the weight of your shoes.
You can also find the weight of your shoelaces by replacing the orthotics in the above equations with shoelaces.

By the way, yes, take out the "padded thing," aka the insole.
