So I went to the sports doctor and he recomended I get orthotics because my right leg is a tiny bit shorter than my left leg and my right foot is flater than my left one which is not that great either. Coach also reccomends it. I've also been injured a lot lately.
Thing is we spoke and I asked him about the whole "born to run" thing and he said something to the effect that humans were not really designed to walk let alone run.
I have had a lot of injuries in the past few months but that could also have been from stupid overtraining and changing the way I run. I didn't have a coach before.
My question is, is there an alternative to getting these orthotics? Should I get them? Should I wear them all the time? Why or why not orthotics?
I guess its a coin toss as to what u shd be doing.
For me, having s shorter left leg by half an inch had given me hip problems for years, though not so bad that I could not run or improve my times. But in recent times things got a bit trickier and my coordination got badly affected, tho this was contributed by poor training as much as by the LLD.
I went minimalist eventually, and adopted that very unpopular running method that Letsrunners despise most, and actually got better. Nope, my shorter leg didn't get longer, but my coordination improved such that I was no longer landing differently between each leg, which happened a lot in the past.
Now I run in minimal shoes all the time, and also barefooted on some shorter runs. Initially I had problems because I wasn't a very competent practitioner of that dreaded method, but after abt 2 yrs I'm running free again, and enjoying it more than before.
I would despise orthotics actually, but for some people it has worked well so u might be one of those. Give both minimalism and orthotics a try and see what happens. But my bias is that improving your running skill matters most in the end.
Thank you.
