The Buffalo Chips is a great club for connecting with other runners in Sacramento. The workouts that are held every tues night, in any weather, have had up to 70 or so peeople in the fall and the workouts are run on a business park loop versus a track to accomodate the number of people. They also have track workouts on thursdays, organized tempo runs and long runs on the weekends.
George Parrot is not the president and he has not been the president for 20 or more years. Parrot is a key figure in the club because he sets the workouts. He does believe in the Lydiard philosphy and 20 or so years ago yhey had a strong racing team back who could handle the mileage and the distance. I personally think he's dead on regarding the LSD and volume and the workouts held on tues night have a good amount of volume for someone running 80+ per week.
But when i've gone to one of these workouts, there seems to be no purpose. They go out and run each of these long repetitions (up to 2 miles!) as hard as they can and try to run each one faster than the previous one. When I went to the workout, I was running around 70 mpw but the racing format of these workouts was really taxing and i suspect that many of some of the slower runners out there don't come back very often and therefore don't stay with the club long enough to improve. It's too bad cause back in the 80's they were running pretty well on the PA circuit.
