I ran my first rep workout of the season today. I followed a slightly altered form of your running formula last spring and had some great results, so I am sticking with it. I have been putting in base weeks of 85-90 mpw, and doing a few tempo runs. Today I ran 18x300m at Rep pace with full rest. I took a 400m slow jog and then walked 100m back to the starting line, and then stood around a bit too, since I didn't always feel completely rested....I figured since I am at altitude it takes a bit more time to "fully" recover.
On the second to last rep I looked at my heart rate monitor and it said 210 bpm. In interval workouts last spring the highest my heart rate ever got was 204...so I figured my max was 204/205....definitely not as high as 210. And I don't know why it would get so high on a 300m rep with full rest. Does this make sense or was the HRM just malfunctioning. I know sometimes on easy runs it jumps up to 226 bpm or down to 00 bpm, usually when I am near powerlines (coincidence? I don't know). Could it have just been a malfunction, or was my heart rate really that high? If so, does that mean I need to be taking more rest after each rep? I finished the workout pretty exhausted....but mostly muscular soreness. It didn't feel like lactic acid accumulation...more just muscles not being used to moving that fast and being fatigued. Any thoughts?
