the fact that he is 20.
Those are kenyan-like times for a 20 year old.

Ummm...ever heard of answering the OP's question?
those numbers are about 20th on last years kenyan lists
3:54. Because it's his mile time.
In all truthfulness, none of them is all that impressive on the world stage. This is not a dig on Jager who is running just fine (and the video of him mixing it up among a sea of Africans is promising).
My point is that there is this tendency lately to glorify young runners who are either running well or who pop out a good time or two. This leads to this incessant arguing about the superiority of Jager to German to Rupp to Ritz to Hall to Webb to Whogivesashit.
America will not produce a world beater until Yager's times are considered commonplace. The tide has to lift to all boats or we will continue to lag behind.
As much as I have critcized Nike for his encouragement of the illegal drug trade, they are right that training groups are the key to the future. If Teg (or someone else) is ever going to Medal, they are going to need an army of 13:22/7:41/3:54 guys running up their ass everyday and tryin to take their spot.
That 7:41 3k is equal to about an 8:12 2 mile. THAT impresses me. I watched the race (on again now) on Universal today and he stayed with the lead pack til the last 600m or so then couldn't pick it up with them.

Um, are you sure about that? Seems a little generous to me...
IAAF scoring tables say the 3k.
Makes plenty of sense. His mile was run during 5k training early in the season. The 5k was his second all year, in a championship race (which was windy and pacing was erratic), also over a month ago.
The 3k was the most recent and may be his best event right now. Utilize his natural miler-esque speed, blended with 5k training, but without needing the enormous aerobic base that many of his competitors at the 5,000 have.
Not saying that Jager's undertrained or isn't doing enough mileage, but he's just 20 years old. Great for his age group, but throw him in the same group as Bernard Lagat and he's missing a few years of aerobic development.
It is more like 7:41>8:15>8:18 to them.

100% false...and actually completely the opposite. If Teg needs a army of guys running behind him to do better, he will never be a champion. This is America, they aren't running for their lives. If they don't have the desire and the fire to succeed without someone aiming for their spot, they won't do it ever, especially with someone trying to take their spot. Worrying about those around you, who are trying to beat you does not help you run better. Worrying about making yourself the best you can be is what matters. Those who can do that are the ones who end up great.
Not to mention us American's have had hundreds of Africans taking spots at the meets where it counts...how has that helped drive us? It's not just at our national meets...competition for worlds and olympics and big European meets has not raised the level of our guys neccesarily. So that argument is completely moot.
Jager's 3K to two mile converted is approx. 8:18 for two miles.
take 3K time divide by .926 I believe.
Gets you to 8:18 fraction.
when did he do that 3k
Well said.
His 200
His hair.

Right on, based off the traditional conversion used. While people can debate the conversion, there is no way it equates to an 8:12. That is basically a straight conversion of his 3k to a 3200m with no slow down factor at all. Then you have to deal with the next 18m.
What would Withrow have done if Nike had stolen Shumacher after his freshman year??
You are an idiot. America is a capitalist country and almost everything operates according to the survival scenario. Your comment is moot you mute. or mut, rather.

Stop trolling dumbass. You're saying the key to having an American run 12:50 is to NOT have lots of 20 year-olds running 13:2X or faster? Good logic.
