Toni's fine column in runnersworld.com Daily News stated:
"We still call it "the sport of running". But is it anymore? Why don't we just call them "parades of fitness"? Without a cohesive program in place at the national level to monitor, regulate, and sustain interest in the sport of running, we will find interest levels continuing to dwindle. If it's even possible to dwindle further. Certainly the lack of homegrown talent is a major stumbling block. Notwithstanding, finding ways to generate interest in elite competition, regardless of where the champions come from, should be of concern to all."
How do we define the "sport"? The likes of SportsCenter pander nearly exclusively on team sports, unless the oddity American story becomes compelling enough for an occasional package piece like that done with Lance Armstrong. That said, cycling as a sport is having at least as many issues as running, as is boxing
in decline from its previous pillar of mainstream interest. I cannot think of another individual sport that garners much mainstream interest outside of the Olympic bubble ... maybe figure skating?!?
So what's the deal? Do we need to package elite running into a team concept? Do we follow NASCAR's lead in terms of marketing their league domesticallly? Are the shoes companies in some way responsible to the schools they target as their customer base to promote excellency in fitness, planting the seeds of running sport at the primary level?
Where on earth is USA Track and Field in all of this???
