One of the disappointments was that Olympian Andrew Wheating didn’t get a chance to compete at the U.S. meet. He suffered a slight tear in the soleus muscle of his left calf during the 800-meter final at the NCAA championships.
Wheating won the NCAA title, but he was a late scratch from the U.S. meet.
“We would have liked for Andrew to compete in the U.S. championships, but not at the risk of further injury,” Lananna said. “I don’t know what might have happened if he ran, but I didn’t like the way it looked.”
The good news for Wheating is that if he can show that he is completely healthy over the next few days, he can still get into some European meets.
He has already been granted a lane in the mile at the Aviva British Super Grand Prix meeting at London’s Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium on July 25.
“Right now, we’ve got an opportunity for him to compete three or four times in Europe,” Lananna said.
“I think it’s important for his development to do that. He’ll probably run the mile in London, and if everything is going well, we’ll see if we can run him in a few low-key 800s as well.”

No idea what that mile field looks like, but it will be great to see him in a big mile race. Shame he couldn't race at USA's since he has a bright future and it would have been great to get some more big experience at worlds.
