German Fernandez? He's in Jordan Right Now
There are a slew online rumors flying around about Oklahoma State freshman and USA Junior Cross Country champion Fernandez, but he is in Amman, Jordan, the site of Saturday's World Cross Country Championships. "He's not 100 percent, he's been a little dinged up, but he's been cross-training diligently," his Coach Dave Smith told us, confirming that Fernandez does have a stress reaction (a frequent precursor to a stress fracture) in his foot. "There's a chance he won't run if it flares up the day of (the Championships)." But Smith believes "he's okay. We have an Alter-G treadmill he worked on for three or four days. Even that made him asymptomatic." Looking ahead, Smith says of Fernandez "he may redshirt outdoors. I think he felt tired already anyway. Who knows what we'll do? We'll play it by ear."
Any opinions, big decisions..does he run and risk possible serious long term injury, possibly not even performing that well or finishing the race.
Or does he rest up and try to come back for outdoor season, he hasn't raced considerably so not sure why he's tired enough to skip outdoors altogether. Although may be a good idea to save eligibility for when he's ready to do some serious damage to NCAAs.
