Mosop trounces the field and school boy Mathew Kisorio comes second.
GF would've won the junior race by two minutes! Clearly he'll win easily in Jordan. His time also equates to a much faster time than the winner of the senior race, so he'll probably double back after the junior race and win the senior title in Jordan too...or at least beat all the Kenyans.
Are you sure she would beat Mercy Cherono?
I'm very happy today, because my two athletes won the senior Championships for men and women.
This is something doing history, because, for the first time, they are husband and wife.
I was very much confident in Moses Mosop from the beginning. We planned, from October, the World Cross Champs, knowing that Kenenisa Bekele could not run because injured. Moses knows very well that Bekele in shape is unbeatable in cross and 10,000m. I told him that never I want to hear the word Bekele from his mouth. His model must be Zersenay Tadesse, that in 3 years won 3 titles in HM and 1 title in cross.
His plan was to be at 90% of shape for Kenyan Trials, and of course 100% for Amman.
Really, we supposed the competition could be more tough, but many strong runners were out of shape, may be because too many competitions or too hard training without the right modulation.
I'm the coach of Moses from his beginning (2002), when he was not able to go in the junior team for 10,000m in World Junior Champs, but after speaking with him I discovered a lot of passion for running and a lot of motivation.
The first time I went to meet him in his house (3,100m of altitude, 6 km far from any other house...), I understood that, for running in those conditions, the boy had enormous passion. I was attracted by his character, so humble but at the same time proud, and immediately I found a human feeling with the boy.
Different the story with Florence Kiplagat.
She started with the group of Patrick Sang and Chelimo, that always are able to produce top talent. I never was her coach.
When, at the beginning of last year, Moses and Florence married, soon she was pregnant, that was the reason because didn't run last year. They had a baby, Aisha, 11 month ago. Florence started running again last September, 3 month after the birth of Aisha, and Moses asked me to follow her. So, that's the reason because I became the coach of Florence too.
I was really impressed by the speed of improvement of Florence. I never saw in my life an African athlete running so fast 11 month after the motherhood only. In October, I planned some easy competition for March, not looking at the cross season. In November, I started to think about one-two cross in Europe in February. After December, I spoke with the manager (Gianni Demadonna) planning 2 cross in January together with the husband, she went and won. After this, I decided to plan directly a medal for World Cross Champs, after winning Kenyan Trials. Yesterday Florence had her task less difficult, because Lineth Masai had some problem in her tendon during last period, and her shape was not at the top, but Iness Chenonge was very tough competitor, being in the best shape of her life.
I think that, for the women race, behind Dibaba (for me not beatable), everything is possible, so for Florence we look for a possible medal.
Now I'm in full agreement with the head coach of Kenya, Julius Kirwa, that was my student during the course for elite coaches in 2007, and of whom I'm the mentor.
I hope that really, after 10 years, the individual title of Senior Men can go back to a Kenyan, because the situation of Amman, with the course completely dry, 1000m of altitude and a temepertature about 20 degrees, is the best for Moses, that when is muddy is not competitive enough.
Congratulations, Sr. Canova!
Would you mind sharing the training blocks for Mosop and/or Kiplagat? We completely appreciate your insight and experience.
