13:18 and change.
You sir will be the next American to break 13 minutes. Kudos on being the greatest runner ever to wear an Oregon jersey.

I think his 5000 meter time passes both his mentor Alberto Salazar and Pre. Not Bill McChesney though.
Great time!
Congratulations!

It's certainly debatable, but not really an overstatement. He runs in a much more competetive time than the ducks of the 80's and before, but yet he convincingly won NCAA cross country. He holds the American CR for the 10K, has been to the world championships and the olympics, and was the top american in the 10K at the olympics. His time was pretty impressive considering the conditions in Beijing.
Regarding the 5K, Rupps workout last fall on the 30-40 drill demolishes what any other duck has done before. Some of those guys got down near 13:00. His 1:51 800 opener indicates a HUGE increase in speed for him.
Rupp has most certainly hit the next level. If he has an assault on the 10K AR this season in reasonable conditions, I think he will blow it away.
The 3 real barriers for Rupp right now are 4:00 (unofficially has been under it) 13:00 & 27:00. Who else do we have that can honestly say those are the barriers they'd like to get this season?
I think he'll go back to speed now and NCAA indoors. Probably start his outdoor campaign a little bit late, but maybe another 10K at cardinal. Perhaps he should wait until he graduates and signs his contract before attempting that record though.
GF?
well bernard lagat has run sub 4 in the mile, sub 13 for 5k, if he ran a 10k he would have a shot at sub 27, lagat ran a indoor 3:51 mile and 7:35 for 3k last week, so i would say lagat can still beat rupp, but rupp in young, lagat is 34 years so that should change in a few years.

Nothing to convince me of that yet. Until he runs 5K or 10K we have no frame of reference. I think 13:20 outdoors is realistic, maybe even 13:teens but he needs to put one down first.
Rupp is overrated, seriously people look at the facts. He will never do anything big on the world scale. He has all these great college records that in reality mean nothing. He's a 5th year guy setting all these records too after taking time off to strictly train. He's got more advantages than any other runner in the world. Kudos to Rupp, NOT. GF is a true freshman and shows a hell of a lot more potential than Rupp. McD ran 13:20 almost 2 years ago. Move on to the next great US hope. Fernandez.
you read my mind.

well, forgetting that bernard has a positive epo test behind him and doctors claim there has never been a false positive i'll entertain this.
Lagat is 33, his PR's are all at least 2 years old. His mile and 1500 PR's are 8 years old. He's still running fast, but his lifetime best for 5K is 12:59, despite being a 3:26 1500 meter runner.
Lagat is still very capable of winning a championship 5K, but I don't know if he's going back under 13:00.
Kennedy was a two time NCAA champion in cross country (something Lagat never did) and his marks look as follows:
3000 meters 7:30.84 (American Record)
2 miles 8:11.59 (Former American Record)
5000 meters 12:58.21 (American Record)
10,000 meters 27:37.45
I think Lagat is a little more like Kennedy, with more emphasis on the speed end. Rupp obviously has more emphasis on the strength end but somehow opened indoors with a 1:51.

hehe, yeah and Rupp ran 27:33 two years ago and it's still the American Collegiate Record and the fastest that any colletiate has run in the past 2 years.
and yes, you're right, eclipsing a 27 year old American record, being the fastest American ever at the distance is overrated. you have a great perspective.
GF does show great potential, most think more than Rupp and I would agree. He needs to climb the levels though, because potential is only that. When he breaks college and american records than he will deserve the recognition of doing so. For now, he is a very talented sub 4 minute miler with a lot of potential.
As of now, his record against Rupp is getting stomped before dropping out.

to the first sentence, who cares what year in college you are when you set an American record? his collegiate 10K record was set in his 3rd year? is that not good enough? did he have to be a freshman?
to the second sentence, that is pretty laughable. how does epo rank on your scale of best advantages?
I think Rupp is a great american talent.
a nice time is great but he hasn't proven to race well in big time international races with the Africans .
I hope he breaks 13:00 this summer, but will he be ready for the WC Final ?
Jesus Christ people. Get your head above water for just, seriously, a split second. Those of you downplaying this are out of touch with reality. Jealous, bitter, delusional, I don't know.
No person in the history of the United States of America has run faster on an indoor track for 5000 meters than Galen Rupp just ran. Not Prefontaine, not WEJO, not Bernard Lagat, not German Fernandez, not ROJO, not Alan Webb, not you, not me, not Tim Tebow, not Dean Karnezes, not James Bond, not the Flash, not Captain America himself! Do you understand that?
There is no other way to put it. It is the fastest an American has run. EVER. Talk about Rupp's unfair advantages, college eligibility, age, whatever. Your eyes are green with jealousy. No American has ever run that fast. Not even the ones with syringes of EPO and Goat Milk hanging out of their veins.
Rupp is phenomenal, and he's phenomenal at a mere 22 years of age. The kid is IT for US distance running.
Rupp has raced 4 damn meets in 4 damn weeks in a row, everything from the 800 to the 5k to the relay, from rust-busting to fighting sickness, representing the University of Oregon just as well as anyone has ever and representing the USA in fine fashion against some of the best runners in the world.
Take a moment and realize this is a great time in running. And, instead of trying to rationalize with yourself why you hate Galen Rupp for being so good, why don't you just sit back and realize the kid is genuine, has a good heart, and is never going to please you no matter what. You are what is known as a HATER.
Post of the year
along with hall and lagat, he is one of America's hopes for a big time medal.
MAYBE YOU SHOULD STOP HANGING ON HIS NUT SACK.
WILL HE RUN FAST WHEN IT MATTERS?
one the international level, american records are not respectable.
I hate that pathetic argument about how he is only 22yrs old.
Are you kidding me? Wanjiru destroyed last year's marathon field @ age 21.
Thank you.
Way to go Rupp!

For the love of god, will you not use Kenyan "ages" as facts? You lose all credibility.
'One(sic) the international level not respectable' ???
Give it a break. How many countries have faster records? You make it sound like this and other American records are nothing. Yes, they are slower when compared to a handful of countries, but these and other times are very respectable on the world scene.
Will he win a major championship or race? You don't know unless you try and that is what he (and others) are out there trying todo. Why the constant teardown of all these kids? Jealousy or just trying to be a dick?
Awesome race by Chelanga too!!! 13:19 is sick.
