Dug the first Skylon in the early 90's. Try on a pair of the spring 09 Supernova Glide. Good cushion in heel and forefoot, perhaps slightly softer than the Skylon, but very nice fit feel, transition.

I'll second McManus' plug (full disclosure - I don't work for adidas).
Glide is a great shoe. Feels softer than the original Skylon, but more substantial than the current Skylon. You could also look at the Adistar Tempo which is a little firmer ride.
