If your looking to pull the trigger on this training investment, which would you purchase. The Polar is about $200 less than the Garmin 405HR model, and the Polar brand appears to have a very good history of putting put quality products.

Polar may have had a history of good products, but the 200SD certainly wasn't one of them. I had two (one for myself, one for my wife) and both crapped out with mysterious "battery low" messages even with new batteries. Sent them back to Polar, both were "repaired" and both went back to their bad ways within weeks.
I've had a number of other Polar watches, the Coach, RS700, and a couple I can't remember the models. All worked relatively well although the upload technology often left something to be desired. The 200SD is a POS, avoid it like the plague.
I have a Garmin 405 now.
I don't run in heavy foliage much, so the Garmin was the better product for me. I had the SD and gave it away. The calibration always had me wondering.

In my experience, Polar actually has a spotty record of producing good products.
I've had both Polar and Garmin, and I love my 405. Even running in the foliage of New England, if you just use it for average speed, it does a pretty good job. The accuracy is good too.
If you do get the Garmin, however, be sure to download the most recent software update. As per usual, the software they launched with was terrible.
