He played a lot of baseball growing up and that looks a lot like he is sliding in for a steal. It is probably second nature for him to dive.
I give the kid credit for going for it and trying to pass another guy at the end.
Good for them, and good for the officials.
With cameras (presumably) on both sides of the finish line, it's easier to call winners and losers; but even with two cameras, sometimes parts of the torso are obscured, in which case a tie should be called. Too often officials seem to feel obliged to break a tie, when they don't have the complete photo evidence to do so.
Not sayin' that's what happened here, I'm just sayin'...
Actually, from the way there was a place picker standing on each side of the finish line, directly on the line, I'm not sure they had photofinish at all. I have timed a race with a dead heat to the thousandth, but the vast majority of the time linescan cameras allow you to make the call.
The most obvious example of this is the 2008 OT Men's 800m Final.

Look at the finish results. The West is going to dominate next year with runners returning for their senior years finishing 11th, 14th, 24th, and 25th. THe West should rally be strong with these guys as the base for next years group. And who is this 9th grader who finished 7th? Rumor is that he is Solomon's younger brother, and is actually a 20 year old 9th grader. He should really be good in three years.
