Great to see someone take academics so seriously and have such a vigorous courseload (to get a 4.83, you would need to take all AP classes except for one, and get straight As, so 4.0 unweighted).
Seems like Stanford will be the fit for her.

ummm...and what makes you an authority on this....seeing as I doubt she took AP classes freshmen year.....
if you got a 4.83 at my school you'd be at the back of the class....tops were high 7's
it depends on the school and how they factor it
.. What type of grade scale are you on?
This is by the standard grade scale of 4.0 unweighted being the highest, meaning you have straight As. 5.0 weighted is the highest, if you take all APs/Honors and get As in all of them.
And they mentioned the GPA during the intros.

Riddle me this, all AP classes and all Bs give you a 4.0 ?
While she does have a great GPA...I bet that almost all of those girls had as high or higher grades...those are super high achievers.....
Yes, a 4.0 WEIGHTED though, and a 3.0 UNWEIGHTED which is crap and wouldn't be close to any decent college's standards. Schools like Berkeley and UCLA typically have around a 3.8-3.9 unweighted and 4.3 or so weighted. Places like Caltech, MIT, etc. are usually around 4.5 weighted.
high school GPA doesn't mean shit, too many factors to take into account
I know she finished way back in the pack, but she's probably the smartest girl in the field. Homegirl rocked a 5 on the BC calculus test...as a FRESHMEN. She does attend an academic superstar of a highschool, but still, thats impressive

I was at the meet today. A LOT of girls have GPA's in the 4.3-4.8 range.
The most impressive was Kathy Kroeger who WON the National Wendy's High School Heismann Award.

Realistically GPA doesn't mean shit, but most people and schools use it as a means to measure performance so theoretically it is good to have a good GPS.
I hear Trevor Dunbar has a 6.15.
Word on the street is that Trevor Dunbar can kill a seal and a polar bear with his own bare hands. At the same time.
I also hear that Trevor Dunbar didn't win today...
While it certainly is impressive, each school has a different grading scale when it comes to GPAs. My HS had a 4.0 for a 93, 4.12 for a 94,..., and 4.87 for a 100 in regular classes. Honors classes had a 4.5 for a 93, 4.62 for a 94,..., and 5.37 for a 100. Our AP classes started at 5.0 for a 93 and went up like the rest. Also some of our AP classes were year round and the first semester only counted as honors. Also we had block scheduling so the most APs we could take in a year was four. I know schools where kids could take 6. So every school is different and while I'm sure her 4.83 is impressive, weighted GPAs only matter when you are comparing people in the same school taking the exact same classes.
weighted gpa's mean nothing.
At my high school an A in AP gave you a 4.5, so whenever I heard about someone with a 4.7 I laughed because that wasn't possible at my school.
It is impressive to hear their unweighted GPA and then also the number of AP/honors classes they took. And yes I understand she took many AP's and had an impressive unweighted GPA so I am not knocking her, just the system.

I expect your GPA is lower than 4.83 if you think that's more impressive than Hasay's win. There are lots of valedictorians and kids with high gpa's, but there's just one Footlocker champ. Would really be more impressed with a stranger's very-high GPA or that they're a Footlocker champ?
Learn to think.

I agree...GPA doesn't say much but you definitely know where you stand with GPS.
ok, no offense, but getting a 5 on BC as a frosh is hardly impressive...tons of people do it all the time, including me. yeah shes probably relatively faster for a girl than i am (16:40ish) but still, bc calc is an utter joke. it doesnt mean crap in how smart you are.
take some REAL math. if you think calc bc is math, you need to look again. its basically just plugging in numbers
What the hell is with schools and all this bizarre GPA weighting. At MOST I could see the normal 4.0 scale being changed by 1.0 point for AP courses (5.0 for an A, 4.0 for a B).
We took AP courses and never got a weighted grade. I was 14th in my class in GPA but always tested top 2. I did get some college credits for the AP courses though. My college GPA ended up EXACTLY the same as my high school GPA.
