Born and raised in California, I've never really experienced any snow and sub-freezing temperatures. I mean, I've gone snowboarding several times, but even then, it was a sunny day and temperatures were in the high 30's (yes I know, crappy conditions).
In the past, I've read threads like "How to breathe in Cold weather", "How to keep your dick from falling off in the cold", etc., and always chuckled to myself, knowing that in sunny CA, I would never have to worry about such extreme temperatures.
But now I am seriously worried.
Spokane, WA has been given a severe snow storm warning, with a high of 26 degrees and a low of 6. With windchill and a 11am race time, who knows what it might be at the start.
I seriously have no idea how to prepare for this. The coldest conditions I have ever raced in was right around 30 degrees with a sunny day and no wind. I mean...do I wear multiple pairs of underwear beneath my shorts? Do I double up on socks? I've heard of people slathering on some olive oil or something right around race time.
What do I do?
Also, if anybody has any priceless advice just for general "How to be warm" tips for when I'm not running, that would be great too. I have one pair of thermal long underwear, but in 6 degrees I don't know if that'll be enough.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Especially before Friday morning when I leave and can't pack anything else.
