So I'm off to Missouri for Thanksgiving and to watch my nephew play in the State Football championships in St. Louis at the Rams Dome.
Now my nephew is a running back and kind of scrawny. He also runs the 100m in 10.8. It's not elite high school like say a 10.3, but it's not bad either for someone with the following genes:
In high school I would be lucky to break 12 for the hundred since I was a miler; naturally, a 4:30ish guy. I just didn't have the wheels to go under 11. I was fine however at longer distances and my brother was a decent runner even though he didn't run for school. I assume he would have been a middle distance guy like me.
So my brother married a girl who is heavier, as in, I don't think she can run a single block. She's short and over the years has filled out. There is not a running muscle, short or fast twitch in her body.
So, how in the world does my nephew turn out to be a 10.8 100m guy and 23 foot long jumper when all the gene indicators are that he should be running middle distances?
