How much does increasing mileage actually increase fitness?
Say someone runs a 26:20 8k off of 50 miles a week (or any race off of any number of mpw for that matter), how much of a benefit is increasing mileage to say 75, or even 100 miles a week, considering it is done properly and doesn't lead to injury etc. I understand fitness also comes from workouts/long runs, and sleep, diet, and other supplementary training also affects performance but I was wondering specifically about base mileage.
