How do Elites Periodize their year?

I am also curious. How does Tomescu-Dita come off an Olympic Marathon goal and then sign for Chicago? How does Geb do Berlin a month later? How will Kara Goucher do NY 8 weeks after Beijing?

I do not understand how such performances are had with around 4-8 weeks of pure training.

Elite's periodize, just not in the exact way Matveyev described. Really, Verhansky (spelling...i know) is arguing semantics. AND most elites don't periodize their work the way Verh.. suggests.

Most use a mixed periodization in which all elements are there, but the percentage and emphasis changes slightly.

Canova use Verkhoshasky exactly, just using different term. Yuri is the director of coaching education in Italy.

Block A, B, C becomes General (and Fundamental), Special and Specific. Read his stuff carefully and you'll see it.

No one who honestly paid attention in BIO 101 uses Multi-pace training anymore. It completely ignores the law of adaptation. The body works better if training is done in blocks devoted to a few (2) training elements, wit hta period of intertwining before moving to another block.

Accumulation, Transmutation, and Realization.

Canova doesn't follow his ideas that closely.

Verh believes in developing one particular aspect at a time (i'm simplifying). Look at his graphs for easy understanding. It moves from A to B to C.

Canova on the other hand has every component in his training at almost all times. Hudson does a good job of explaining this in his book if you don't like reading Canova. Canova has A,B, and C in every period, just to varying degrees.

Verh. is more like what lydiard used to do and if you read Canova you'll know he said that Lydiard type periodization does not work in modern athletics.

How about some actual examples? Anyone know of what an elite runner actually does in terms of saying, OK, I've for 4 races this year I want to win, how am I going to go about it.

If you really want to know, you have to go to the sources.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of elite training manuals out there. Look at all that you can find, there will be major differences.

For a little older school model check out Peter Coe's book and Harry Wilson's book.

Read Brad Hudson's book and Canova's marathon training book too.

As far as threads on letsrun, Canova's thread and the Cabral-Hadd thread are excellent.

The british milers club also has some good training excerpts from guys like Moorcroft that will show you their periodization.

I think Cabral and hudson do the best job of describing periodization in simple terms.

Generally, in the old days most coaches used a linear periodization (ala Lydiard), while most modern coaches now use a nonlinear periodization.
