Do altitude tents really make a big difference? I'm a 22 year old 3:48 1500m runner, and I'm thinking about buying an altitude tent. If it does make that big difference, how big would it be if I was using it between now and Track season?

In short, none, unless you'll be using it to do treadmill workouts to prep for specific races at altitude.
You just can't replace true altitude.
I've lived at alittude (6250') and seen the benefits, and have used a tent and saw none of the same.
Not a waste of money, just a costly lesson.
yea, probably not worth the money
Sounds like you need an ATTITUDE TENT, MISTER.

Since it did not work for you, it must not work for anyone. What if you just were too dumb to know how to use it?

Yes the do work! However, you need to learn how to use them

OK, so that's my N=1 experience. However, you can also do massive amounts of searching via pubmed or google-scholar and see that virtually nobody seems to "know how to use it", other than to be able to be better prepared for higher altitude efforts.
My room is fully sealed and can achieve up to 13,000'. However, I tend to sleep at 8,000'.
I'm all for you enlightening me on how to use this thing, as I haven't sold it and am not too proud to admit I could be wrong.
It's just hard to keep up the hope after not seeing a low-altitude performance benefit and finding massive amounts of studies that had the same results as myself.
What's your protocol?

Waiting for the two posters to fill us in on how we are supposed to use these devices. You want to call me an idiot, then tell me what I was doing wrong.

1-2% is the commonly quoted number. But there are good chunk of people that don't respond to altitude (unclear if they needed more time, higher/lower altitude,...). And yeah altitude tents are different than real altitude. The oxygen level is the same but the pressure is different.

No Rupp references yet? I'm disappointed Letsrun..
I moved from sea level to altitude about 1.5 years ago and honestly it wasn't until this summer that I felt "normal" so my best bet is wait it out a year and see if anything changes if not then you just wasted 5 grand

Well, having lived at altitude (6250') for a few years, I don't see why it would take more than a few months with the normobaric-hypoxic room to get back to where I was after living at 1000' for about 4 months.
Anyhow, it was only $2500 ;)
Plus, I'm moving back to Big Bear (6750') soon enough and will be able to use the hypoxic generator to prep for specific high altitude events.
Again, I did a ton of research, followed a strict protocol, ferretin levels were always sufficient, and yet I've not been able to get the form I had while living at altitude. Notably, the ability to accelerate and fall back into a pace at threshold is MUCH harder.
just move high man, sac up and make the plunge.
No but really... I'm looking for some serious answers on how big of a difference it could make for me. And for those who know, what is the right way to use it. How high to sleep, and when to stop using it.
I have been sleeping in a tent since early July. Seems to be working for me. We'll see this season.
It seems like it would be more useful if you could workout on a rowing machine or treadmill while inside it. Seeing as most people these days get 6-7 hours of sleep, I wouldn't think being in for such an amount of time would do it.
"Live high, Train low" is the philosophy. Do some research on Dr. Robert Chapman, he is an advocate who has done some work in this field. The idea is that you can reap the benefits of decreased oxygen while living/sleeping, but train at or near sea level which is desirable for most training.
With that said, it is recommended that you spend 10-12 or even more time in the altitude tent per day above 8500 feet. You dont just have to sleep in there. If you have one of the larger CAT tents, you can fit quite a bit of furniture in the tent. I watch TV, study, and sleep in the tent every night.
Yeah. It seems like you'd want to spend at least half your day in one. What would happen if you did an AM workout on the treadmill or rowing machine in it and track work in the PM? For an 800m runner? Nada? Or would it make the running feel a lot easier outside?
