Hey guys. I want to start running and competing at local meets for fun. I also want to throw in a couple of 5k races once in a while.
I was wondering, what is the best way to start training? Should I start out doing some distance? Also, how long? I don't care about the 5k too much and would rather focus on getting sub 50 second 400m and hopefully a sub 5 minute mile. This way I think I can also run a sub 2 minute 800m. I would be able to compete and maybe even win some of the local meets and not be creamed by 12 year-old girls and grandmas.
I read an article by coach Clyde Hart about developing a 400m athlete. This is the Sept - Dec routine:

Is it a good idea to start doing this type of training or should I start with some distance first? Reason is I don't think I can run 600m more than once unless I do it in like 2 1/2 to 3 minutes...
Also, for the actual times that are suggested, I read something about vVO2max where you run for 6 minutes and you get your workout pace from that. Is that the times I should use when doing this workout?
When looking at Fartlek, I see that it means speed play. I still don't understand it. Would a 20 min Fartlek example be something like:
800m - 4 minutes
400m - 90 seconds
200m - 30 seconds
800m - 4 minutes
400m - 80 seconds
1600m - 7 minutes 30 seconds
600m - 1 minute 50 seconds
Total time: 20 minutes
Total Distance: 4600m
Would I benefit from doing my 3 mile runs as follows:
1600m - 8 minutes
3200m - 15 minutes 30 seconds
4800m - 21 minutes
Or should I try for a steady pace of say 7 minutes per mile.
The local meets will be around Summer time, so I have time to train, and those 5k runs are basically every week from now on. I figure next year, I should be in pretty good shape to be able to actually compete in those 5k races and not just participate. Is that assumption true? Usually under 17 minutes gets top 3, but first is sometimes close to 15 minutes.
Thanks for the input.
