Any strong feelings out there about which edition, one or two, of Jack Daniels Running Formula is better?
I'm figuring out a plan for sub 2:55 in Boston (female masters runner). Thanks

I like the black label personally.
does it really matter, editions are essentially the same. new editions are just an attempt to make more money.
I say you mix a little from column a and column b add a lime and a little coke and you got yo self a marathon.
I would assume the 2nd edition is "better", but I haven't seen it. In any case it shouldn't be worse. That being said, I'd recommend Pfitzinger/Douglas "Advanced Marathoning" which trained me to my sub-2:55 (though not as a female masters runner).
He is currently coaching Ilsa Paulson, the former N. AZ St. runner who came out of nowhere to be the 1st American after Dereuck at the NY 1/2 m and placed 3rd overall at the 20k in New Haven. He is doing well with her, so he must not be that bad..
Get the second edition, I believe it has added charts for adjusting T pace based on the time you run which are very useful for marathon training. I don't think that you are going to find a new copy of DRF ed. 1 anyway and I would get a new copy, the binding on my copy has fallen apart after only a year.
ru sure, I saw the photos of the new haven race and assumed that it was an 11 year old pulling a Rosie Ruiz.
you should know that he makes very little from those books...the publisher is the winner. However, in my opinion the reader is the big winner. The Pfitzinger/Douglas book could be use as more supplemental to the Daniels book.
That being said, you should read Daniels Running Formula for the methodology not so much for the x's and o's. Do your own workout but make sure it fits in one of his categories. If it doesn't, you probably aren't getting the best return on your investment.

This is a good point which I think a lot of people miss. The programs at the back are just sample programs. The runner or coach is expected to set up his/her own version based on the information in the meat of the text.
