Well, I need to get myself some proper running shorts and I'm very confused. I don't want really short ones, but ones that are a bit above your knee. I don't want to spend more than $20 on each one. What are some recommendations?

Just go to Target....The Champion ones are really nice for about 16 bucks....Sure beats the Starter stuff from Wal-Mart
Brooks makes a few mid-length shorts... Soccer shorts are an option too, as they are designed with running (albeit a different kind) in mind.
Go to your local running store you cheap bastards.

Shorts that long are not running shorts. They are jogging shorts.
as the jingle says, "Academy Sports and Outdoors. Academy!"

I agree. Several good brands there, along with cheaper/longer ones (BCG, Russell, Champion etc). Plenty of good shorts for $20 and under.
Go to brooksrunning.com. They have the Brooks Tempo short on sale right now for $10. I have a pair and they are quite modestly cut. I am quite tall and they provide me enough coverage so I don't feel uncomfortable popping into a fast food place after a run in them.
The Brooks Revelation Pacer are great shorts. I am pretty tall (6'5") and they are proportioned well for long legs.
What if you're not as tall, say 5' 10"? I'm looking for something a little more fashionable for treadmill running in the gym. Knees are taking a real beating on the roads where I don't care much for fashion, but it would be nice to look good as well as run well indoors. Never know who I might meet. Thanks.
Probably should have mentioned I'm only 5'5. I just don't want really short shorts like the ones I use to race in, so what should I be looking for?
Champion mesh basketball shorts at Target. They are good for whatever and they last really long. Just buy some synthetic underwear that's comfortable.
just get spilt shorts. They are so much nicer to run in than full coverage shorts, and feel alot better in the summer heat. The nike raceday ones are really comfortable and you can get them on sale for under $20 sometimes.
Jochen Dieckfoss could point you in the right direction.
