Capeshe on how insane it is to predict this record for every good young runner who comes along? This record gets NO respect.

wow... really puts things in perspective doesn't it...
no one respects what Kennedy did. Everyone was on Goucher, and look what happened lolz!
Goucher so far isn't the runner Kennedy was.
Vaughn averaged 63.9 his entire 13:18.
Teg's 13:04 ~ 62.7s
Solinsky, Webb, Goucher, etc ~ 63.2
Fernandez ~ 63 (for 2 miles in HS)
The record probably won't make it to 2010, though it looks a bit safer today than it did a few months ago.

Lagat's equipped to get the record, but the fact that he's gone for it and not gotten it, is very telling. You think every good distance runner's going to run marathons like Hall has?? Well they're not going to run 12:58 either.

The fact is, most of our 5K'ers avg 62 sec/lap for a 3K. In the past, to predict the record for Hall, Ritz, Rupp or whoever was ludicrous. Even Teg's 13:04 was 0.5 sec/lap away... and that was a huge max effort. Try doing 400M repeats in your best workout... 0.5 sec/lap faster. It's a big deal. Every record's meant to be broken... but it's ridiculous that we've predicted it for runners when they get within 35 seconds.
Not to change the subject too much, but Pre's OT record, STILL STANDING after 36 years and nine subsequent Olympic Trials, averaged 64.2.
and he did it as a junior in college. 13:22, an American record at the time and still the OT 5k record. Hard to believe. I thought that Vaughn was going to run a sub 13:20, like a time trial and figure that 3 other guys could not match his 13:18 pr. Too bad he couldn't pull it off.

I thought for sure Vaughn was throwing the race to help Goucher, given their CU connection and all the talk of Goucher needing a rabbit. Vaughn was written up as not looking good in the semis, so I assumed he figured he wouldn't make it, anyway.

Bekele - 60.5, ouch.
Geb's marathon record is an average 400m of 70.78 seconds
on a track, a marathon would cover 105+ laps

That torn tendon and ligament in his right ankle sure didn't help him the last two weeks. And he knew he needed a fast pace when no one else had the sack to help. Sure, it only matters who the first three are across the finish line no matter how you get there. But at least Vaughn went for it when a couple other guys who needed a fast time didn't even bother...
Kennedy also averaged ~ 60.6 sec./400m for the American 3000m Record of 7:30.xx. one might argue that his 3k AR is more impressive than his 5k record. lagat's fastest is 7:32(indoors), but i could imagine he could get it if he wanted, but who knows, maybe not. point being, kennedy's 3k record is arguably more impressive than his 5k record, i don't care if it's sub 13. 13's just a number. and 7:30's a 1.5 second faster/400m pace for 3k. granted it should be a faster pace, but 7:30 is two back-to-back 3:45 1500m's. most top 1500m times this year have been around 3:40-3:41(komen ran 2 of those back to back, 7:20).

8:34/2=4:17/4=64.25s per quarter mile, not 63

full 2 miles stupid..
thats 64.25 per 440y, which makes it 63.xx per 400 meters.. have you never ran before
he said per quarter mile, not per 400 meters.
Daniel Komen's

Bob Kennedy's
7:30.84 = 60.112 sec./400m
12:58.21 = 62.256 sec./400m ( = 7:46.926 3000m pace )
Alan Webb
3:46.91 = 56.40 sec./400m
Hicham El Guerrouj
3:26.00 = 54.93 sec./400m
Kennedy

Komen
12:41 - 7:20 = 5:21
Bekele
12:37 - 7:25 = 5:12
