Babcock's season isn't over after all. She is going to race a 1500 meter race at Mt Sac.
She never said it was over. She said she didn't have any meets on her schedule at the time of her interview on June 4th...but she also suggested that the Trials were a possibility.
Can someone explain why her state time doesn't qualify her for the 1500 in the Olympic Trials?
Does someone have to run a 1500 to qualify?
Her time was 4:36.57 for 1600 meters.
The B standard is 4:19.50 for 1500 meters.
I think the 4:36.57 is a better time.
If one averages her per meter time it is .172856 per meter. Multiply that by 1500 meters and one would get 4:19.28 and she went a longer distance. It seems like her state time should qualify her.
opps. That was her time at the Masters Meet.
Her state time was 4:33.82.
I believe in trials years it is very difficult to get in off of a conversion.
For example, i think the only way you can get in the mens 1500 with a mile time is by running the trials A standard equivilent, which is 354.5. I think I remember seeing this on the USATF site but I could be wrong.
From the USATF website:
"An appeal to use a mile qualifying mark for the 1500m will be accepted only if a) no 1500m qualifying mark exists, b) the mile mark was made during the 2008 season, and c) the mile mark is equivalent to the 1500m "A" standard (3:54.40 for men and 4:28.20 for women)."
Only "A" standard conversions are allowed.
I bet she runs 4:15 to qualify for the trials. Who else is in the race?
I don't know who will be in the race but I found that the qualifying standard to race in the 1500 is 4:30.

There is no such thing as "only A standard conversions are allowed". The USATF has made exceptions. They let Ritz in when he was short of the B standard by less then a second. I'm sure they'd let Babcock in when she had a time that would actually meet the B standard when converted easily in the interest of the sport. The USATF while not always impressive, does sometimes do things for the betterment of the sport.

But they didn't. That's why she's running this weekend. Regardless of whatever special treatment others have received in the past, the USATF is very clear on the use of mile marks for qualification in the 1500:
"Qualifying marks must be attained in events being contested at the Olympic Trials, except in specific cases involving the Special Qualifying Regulations listed below. An appeal to use a mile qualifying mark for the 1500m will be accepted only if a) no 1500m qualifying mark exists, b) the mile mark was made during the 2008 season, and c) the mile mark is equivalent to the 1500m "A" standard (3:54.40 for men and 4:28.20 for women)."
Note, the Special Qualifying Regulations deal with things like reigning national champions and world medalists.
You can see this for yourself here:
http://www.usatf.org/events/2008/OlympicTrials-TF/entry/qualifyingStandards.aspThe simple part of this that is being overlooked is her 1600 meters is NOT a MILE. USATF allows for mile conversions but not for 1600 meters. She had no choice but to run since this is not an issue that is often a factor.
