Well, of course core work (we didn't use that term) and form drills have been around about as long as organized sport...but I understand what you mean.
IIRC the big push happened right around the turn of the current century.
I have to smile, because I remember interviewing Pete Pfitzinger and touching on this topic, just about 30 years ago. He was into it even then.
Plyo drills were pretty big in the coaching education of the 1980's. I think it was a huge factor in the success of the high school I went to (Agoura - Deena Drossin, Bryan Dameworth, Amy Skieresz, Derek Kite). Bill Duley had us do many plyos and strides before practice. I used to give our warm up routine to people for full workouts.
Early 2000's. It started with the "functional training" guru Paul Chek.
