What is the best and proper way to clean running shoes? Mine smell and have crud on them. All I know is that you're not supposed to put them in the washing machine.
Who says? I put mine in the washing machine all the time...come out very clean, and doesn't harm them. Just use mild soap, cold water, and of course, don't put them in the dryer! :)
Usually it's ok to put them in the wash, just don't put them in the dryer. If it has any glue in it holding it together, that will melt and your shoe will fall apart.
Personally, I spray them down with febreeze when they smell bad. Usually never wash them
I don't see how washing shoes in the washer (in cold) could be any more harmful than getting them soaking wet on a run? I also don't see how regular laundry detergent could hurt shoes. I've washed my shoes in the washer several times. No drier. I just wash them in cold and let them dry in the sun. No problems. I think the idea about not washing shoes in the washer stem from the days when the sytnthetic materials and glue were far more likely to break down.
I throw my running shoes in the washing machine a lot, but I'm also one of those "minimalists" who don't care about stuff like cushioning. I agree with the others -- use cold water, and don't put the shoes in the dryer.
I haven't been real successful in getting rid of the odor of an old shoe, though. Washing helps some, but it doesn't seem to be a complete solution.
Hey guys, I have just been out for run this morning and did some off track stuff on the wet grass. As you can imagine, my shoes are not the cleanest. Is it ok to stick shoes in the washing machine or have you any better suggestions as to how to clean shoes without having to actually hand wash them? Looking forward to your replies,
To clean running shoes to remove smell, you can follow these steps:
> Remove the laces and insoles. This will help you to clean the shoes more thoroughly. >Brush off any loose dirt or debris. You can use a soft brush or a toothbrush. >Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle. >Spray the inside and outside of the shoes with the vinegar solution. Pay special attention to the areas where the shoes are most likely to smell, such as the toe box and the tongue. >Let the shoes sit for at least 30 minutes. This will give the vinegar time to deodorize the shoes. >Rinse the shoes with clean water. >Stuff the shoes with newspapers or paper towels to help them dry. >Once the shoes are dry, replace the laces and insoles.
If the shoes are still smelly after following these steps, to , you can try the following: Sprinkle baking soda inside the shoes. Let the baking soda sit overnight, then vacuum it out the next day. Freeze the shoes overnight. This will kill some of the bacteria that are causing the smell. Use a commercial shoe deodorizer. Follow the instructions on the product label.

I rarely clean running shoes but when I do I just put them in the washer. Shoes get wet and it's no problem. I do not put them in the dryer.

I can’t remember cleaning running shoes when I’m using them for running. I have a few pairs and rotate anyway, so the shoes are always dry and at most might need some slapping against each other if a little dusty. People who need to clean their shoes are probably running stupid much and in sludge and puddles and muddy trails.
I might clean a running show after retiring them and starting to use them as casual wear to look nice.
I wash mine when my socks are soaked (with sweat). Pull out insole and hit them with hot water (only) in the sink with the spray thingy till I get tired of doing it. Let dry in the sun or under a strong fan till they're dry. Keep strings in, no soap.
