Anyone with accurate information on when this is available. I've seen dates listed from April to mid May at the latest. REI and Amazon both say pre-order. Info is appreciated.

They are available at specialty stores now.
I received one last week..have used it on 3 runs...best running accessory I have ever purchased! I owned the 201, which I loved the feedback, but it was just too large. This thing is amazing..normal size watch, very sensitive gps receiver (locates the sats in 20 seconds!) and the touch bezel is easy to use...wireless sync to your pc when you get within 10 feet of your computer. Very nice watch.
I got mine at REI a week ago. Took their last black one. Garmin is going to end up swimming in those puke green ones.
And I second the comment on the super sensitive GPS receiver. The wireless USB connection to the computer is pretty convenient too.

Awwww, c'mon now, I got a green one in Boston when they were first available. I like something other than a black watch, even if it is green.
Have to agree that it's pretty great. I don't use it all the time, but when I do it does a good job of keeping satellites, even in New York's urban canyons -- something the 101 and 201 struggled to do.
I kind of like the green ones, but you make an interesting point. Maybe I should hold out and wait for the green ones to go on clearance.
How long is the watch able to run before recharging? How long does a recharge take? They list times on Amazon, but I'm interested in real-world numbers.
Mine took about 3 hours to charge fully the first time but significantly less after that (although I haven't charged it from 0% again).
It takes less than 5 seconds to pick it up the satellite. I was actually able to pick it up inside my house just goofing around.
I just bought two 205's at Wal-Mart for $149 each. My wife and I each got a Garmin for the price of one 405. I wanted to get one, but I'll wait for the price to come down. I've had the 201, 301 and 305 in the past. They seem to have a habit of breaking as soon as the warranty expires.
Does the 405 have all the functions of earlier models -- especially the interval training stuff? And how does the readability of the numbers compare?

I'm wondering about this too. I have the 305, love all the info it gives me, but would be happier with a smaller unit -- providing it still gives me the same info. Garmin's webpage makes it look like it's essentially the same, but I'm interested if anyone has had first-hand experience with both.
An above poster said that Garmin's products break as soon as the warranty expires. Has anyone else had this experience?
Thanks.
I can't tell you for sure that it has everything that the older ones had because I never had one before. However, the watch has a lot of stuff I haven't even used yet. Living in the city it does take a couple minutes to get the satelites especially if i'm downtown near tall buildings. It does have the all the different training and workout options. the screen is plenty big to see however I'm still working on getting it to look like I want for workouts.
Just think of the times Pre, Rono and Bill Rodgers could have run with one of those!
I just picked up the 405 hr model but didn't realize it was mac compatible :( I also haven't been able to figure out how to set up 10 min/1min run walk intervals...anyone know anything about that???
cheers,
happy Cdn runner...

Nice one!
Except you meant to say NOT mac compatible.
Plus, you should have worked in a fuel belt reference.
Just got a Garmin 405. Turns out the bezel performs horribly when sweaty. (Google search "sweat" "bezel" and "Garmin 405" and you'll see that I'm not the only one who has found this.) Unfortunately, the functionality of the watch is severely diminished by a non-functioning bezel. Luckily, you can lock the bezel while running and it's a non-issue (although when locked it's impossible to switch between displays or activate the backlight). I would recommend going with the much cheaper 205 or 305 (however unwieldly) until Garmin fixes this problem.
Save yourself the money and get the 205 on Amazon for about $150 plus shipping.
