No, it's impractical. It's a sixty mile round trip and the roads I COULD Bike on would make it longer. I have to be at work at 6:30AM, so I'd have to get up around 4AM or so.
I bought a house 12 blocks from where I work. It's 1/2 mile there and 1/2 mile back. The last time I got in my car I had to clean spider webs out of it. Fill up my gas tank every month or 6 weeks.
good for you, lucky
I'm seriously considering it. It's 22 miles round trip.
15mins by bike. I've made it in 12 with a strong tailwind.
Six miles each way. Bike on city streets. Shower at office building health club. Very nice transition between home and office. I recommend it.
Back in the day, when I had a corporate job, my office moved from midtown Manhattan to Queens. I had been able to walk to work in 25 minutes, but that was now impossible because my new office was over the 59th Street Bridge in Queens.
I started to bike to work to save time, and could get to the new office in 18 minutes. I develped a system to keep all of my suits at my office, and would get my shirts laundered once a week and keep them there, too, along with my ties. My secretary called me "Clark Kent" because I disappeared into my office each day for 10 minutes to get changed. The ride was short enough that I didn't get sweaty.
Riding in the winter was a challenge, but the subway was always there as a back-up.
Now I walk from my bedroom to my desk in the living room to go to to work. I've been working from home since 1998.

I bike a couple of days a week but, will be doing at least 3-4 days shortly. It takes me under 30 minutes to get there but, at least 45 minutes to get home as I have several climbs to ride up on the way back. I could almost coast for 4 miles downhill on the way to work. It is probably 7-8 miles one way.
I bike and live 1.5 miles away. I make it a point to live as close to work as possible for this reason. When it snows heavily, I just walk to work and grin at all the cars getting plastered with salt and dirt.
I bike to work on occasion. I live about 3.5 miles from work in downtown Chicago.
Dave Monti,
Question for you. Did you get your suits and shirts laundered at a dry cleaner near your office in Queens or did you take the subway occasionally to transport all of your suits and shirts? Just looking at suggestions since I also live in NYC and would like to bike or run daily to work.
My commute right now is a 4 minute walk. It will soon be 70 miles round trip... I can't afford one of these, but, boy I want one:
Anyone on here have one, or, know someone who does? Are they worth that sort of loot?
Used to when I was employed with the public service. 3 miles each way. Ideal. 12 - 15 min. if I rode hard. Used to run for 30 - 35 min. @ noon hr., showers in basement. Didn't shower after morning cycle, no need, never wore a suit, shirt & tie there. Boy did I have it aces then...then came the unfortunate attack by the powers that be on we union card carrying public service employees.
Oh well, I know, time for me to put away my violin :) Doing just fine now, 'sept for a present injury :(
it's like 20 minutes to work (downhill) and 25 minutes back (uphill)
Until i see an xray of pollution damage in my lungs i will keep on thinking pedalling to work is one of th best decisions i ever took

At first I'd bring home the shirt I had worn that day, add it to the other soiled shirts, and bring them to my shirt laundry in Manhattan. Later, a dry cleaner opened on the ground floor of my office building in Queens, and I switched to them for both shirt and suits when they needed it. The price was about the same and it was a lot more convenient.
The only thing I had to remember each day was a pair of dress socks.
Since I have never had a drivers license, I get to work many different ways depending on what I am doing for training. Sometimes I run or bike the 14 miles and other times I take the bus part way and then bike or run anywhere from the the last 3 to 12 miles. Recently I have even taking the long way riding some mountain bike trails back with a little bit of road. Occasionally I also car pool.
I bike to work daily. It is 12km to the place where we meet and I will tack on a another 5-10 km chasing the work truck to the job site. I then work for 8-12 hours as a roofing laborer, bike home and try to squeeze a run in later at night.
Hard to say if it is really doing me much good.
I am 38 and have had enough of that shit at this point.
rt = ~4 miles
i have a rented bike box at the metro.
$13,000???!!!??? You're kidding me.
