I may be relocating to Atlanta. What is the running community like there, etc? Would love to hear from someone so I can learn a bit more. Thanks!

Call Fleet Feet in Sandy Springs (Johnson's Ferry Road). The staff are good runners and can connect you with others as well. Tell 'em Van sent you.
Where in Atlanta? There is a big group of people who here. Atl. Track club has a competetive team which has a large email train. I could send you a contact over email or you can go to atlantatrackclub.org and look up the competitive team.
atlanta is a pretty big geographical area, so you can technically be "in atlanta" and still be pretty far from the good running scene. where will you be?
I am not familiar with Atlanta. I would like to live in the area that is most convienent w/ where the runners meet, track workouts, etc. I checked out the Atlanta Track Club website, that seems like a good group to be involved with. What areas should I check out to live in? Thanks.
Stay away man unless you like traffic, pollution, heat, humidity, tornados, homeless bums, poverty, and crime. Get a job somewhere else......I wish I would have.
Funny that this is posted since I was/am thinking of relocating ot Atlanta recently. I currently live in
South Florida and it is way too hot here to train all year around and the running sux since it is all on pavement and streets.
I have been to and raced in Atlanta many times during college and found I liked it. It seems like the best training in in the northern part of Atlanta all the way up to Marietta and Kennesaw. Also the job market seems pretty good there and living costs are cheaper than where I am at now.
The weather is hot during the summer but perfect 8 months out of the year and the chance of snow is slim, compared to Ohio where I grew up.
Anyone have any job leads for 26 year old male into Marketing, Event Management/ Entertianment, Internet.
The job thing is the only thing holding me back.

Traffic - yes. but if you live and work in the right spots its no worst than any other city. I live downtown/ Grant Park actually. There is the olympic warmup track open 24/7 with a mile. Downtown tracks are grady and tech on tenth street that I run on. There are many more as well.
Pollution - very true. Never bothered me but I hear its bad.
Heat - Sure. Some summers are bad, but the fall/winter/spring is good running weather usually. It does get surprisingly cold but not like the NE or West with tons of snow. Actually we never get snow.
Humidity - Yes. But again very good climate other than August.
Tornados - been here since '95, no tornados
homeless bums - Are other cities impervious to this? Unless your homeless, get over it.
poverty - Some people here live below the poverty line. I don't believe they are over running the streets though.
crime - I've lived in downtown Atlanta (midtown, near Turner Field, and Grant Park) People who live in the 'burbs ask me if I carry a gun when I run. That's because they are clueless. They watch the shocknewsat5 too much. I've never had any problems in 8 years.
My advise is to live downtown but if you were to live in the burbs the running crew that I know lives in Kennesaw/Marietta. Then you have close access to the Mountain and the river. But hell, then you probably will deal with traffic all day long. I work in Marietta/Smryna and have no problem getting to work and then stay out at the river some days after work for runs. That works well.
I live in kennesaw, and that is one hell of a great place to run. You have some of the best trails in the state very close to that area. Only problem is the air quality is not good, so get up early and your ok
Where exactly in Kenesaw are the good trails? I've heard lots of good things about this area but have never found the good trails.
I live in Athens, GA which is a little out of the way, but if I relocated back to the metro area I would make sure I was within easy reach of Kennesaw Mountain. I personally think those trails are the best thing about metro Atlanta. Having said that you would want to look at Kennesaw, Marietta, Smyrna, Acworth
I used to live there, but I don't make it back there much anymore.
Ruby Tuesday!!
WHATEVER YOU DO, LISTEN TO THE GUYS TELLING YOU TO LIVE DOWNTOWN OR IN MARIETTA!! I live southside, which is outside of 285 and the running down here is for shit! The only exception I can think of is peachtree city which is also south off I-85. Anything over here off I-75 is overcrowded/2-lane highway/no trail-hell. I have done a few ATL Track club races and to be honest, I'm jealous of the running community up north. Should've done reasearch like you did, good move. One more thing, the fleet feet idea was good, so you may want to check out these guys too-- phidippides.com The cats that work @ ansley mall know what's going on and are helpful. GOOD LUCK AND GET READY TO DRINK 50 GALLONS OF WATER A DAY THIS SUMMER!!!

Check out the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield/Park. It has around 20 miles of dirt/gravel trails with plenty of hills and wildlife to keep you occupied. Plus, you can always run straight up the mountain, which is about a mile or so of incline. Another good place is the Chattahooche River National Recreation Area. Chochran Shoals location has tons of nice dirt trails, plus a 5k gravel dust loop. Both places can be busy on the weekends, but the crowds thin out once you get farther out on the trails. Check out this website, it has directions to and descriptions of a lot of trails around Atlanta:
http://members.tripod.com/~SMcAdam/trails/I hope this helps you out.
Definitely check out PHIDIPPIDES they really know their stuff. They have two locations one in sandy springs (right outside the perimeter on the north side), and one in ansley mall. It?s the greatest place to get the right shoes in Atlanta.
thanks for all the info! Now it is just a matter of finding a roommate! haha

Ruby, if I may ask, are you moving to ATL for a job or already have one.
I really want to move back to the area and get my running back going seriously but without a job its kinda hard. Whats your time frame on the move?
Good Luck

I don't have a job yet...but I will only move there if that is in place. I was planning to move after Xmas, but it could be longer. Where did you run in college?

Yep the job thing seems to be a problem since not to many companies want to hire from outside , and they just want local candidates. I went to college @ Alabama-Huntsville from 96-01. I wasn't fast just competitive in a weeker conference, and always seemed to run better out of season when me and a few other were training on our own.
If I do move, it will be after the new years, more likley spring.
Where are you living now.
Also has anyone else moved to Atlanta just within the last year or so? Malcom Campbell if you read this, any insight? I remember racing you at the GSU meet a couple years ago and you won it.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
