I think the starter is using a live weapon. That's not a starter's pistol.
No times were given? Was this course certified by an ITAF official? Where are the fuel belts? Charity runners? Finisher medals? I'm not sure this counts as a "road race". Iraq has a long way to go.
at first I thought you were joking, then I looked at the pictures. Kind of unbelievable really.
I am guessing around 18 minutes for the winner, based on the form shown in the photos.
Not easy to run in long pants in the heat. If some of those guys trained, they could be good runners. They look fit and lithe.

I just wish the police officer would realize the danger of firing a pistol in the air. I think we can safely assume that this was a live bullet round fired randomly into the air.
Little steps, little steps.
The race is nice, though.
Really, that's your concern jpickens? How about sun screen or a nasty side stich? It's Iraq you jacka$$..danger of shooting pistol in the area.
Damn, I bet the winner's feet were burning like hell.
One of my best friends from high school cross country and track was killed in Fallujah in December, 2005. I know for a fact he would have gotten a kick out of seeing (or participating) in a 5k over there. I'm glad to see the improvement in the situation since then.
Potential troll note: Please don't try to turn my comment into some sort of political statement. I am just proud of my friend. That is all.
